Hi Mr. Wizard,

Any estimate of the finally bill? And was the cause loss of coolant? Or did the coolant get "expelled" because of some other failure?

the damage to the engine was considerable but is Not catastrophic
Turbo OK
head OK
its getting six new pistons 0.012 over size , no sleeving needed
new rod bearings etc..
the machine work "reaming/honing" has been completed
parts won't arrive until Tuesday
hopefully back on the road by next Friday

Somewhat good news! I guess the other shop was/is living up to their reputation...gouging!

Any news on the estimate?

MM.

What causes 6 pistons to lose compression and apparently no metal parts damage the head or turbo? Were the pistons burned through the top?

That sure is a far cry from complete engine replacement.

More likely, Affinity wasn't qualified to do internal work on Cats.

George, sounds worse than hoped for, but much better than it could have been. I am glad you have a definitive resolution in front of you and you can plan the resumption of your trip...

I was there at the shop today and got a look at the pistons. Three of them were kind of crumbly on the top surfaces...with holes in them. And the other three look ready to go. Holes in the pistons equals no compression. Like they'd been run hot so many times that the high temp explosions that occur in the cylinders finally broke through. Saw the head too, it looked pretty good, so did the valves.

Has it been determined what caused the overheating? Could it have been bad fuel? After all this work and cost, I'm wondering if you should drain the tank and put some known good diesel in there? Just a thought...

Catching up on this saga late but if the problem is burned pistons, I'd sure want to get the injectors checked unless the mechanic can give me a very good explanation as to why they burned. Overfuelling (injector problems) can burn holes in the pistons and checking them now is sure cheaper than more new pistons later.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

Wiz,

I know that you are in good hands but: I would replace the injectors (good rebuilds are OK) and I would ask if USLD fuel could be a factor with your engine (and if so what else needs to be considered).

I would also want to know about the overheating. Was it caused as a result of the piston problem and pushing the engine to the next exit. Not trying to be critical at all but just want you to drive away with great confidence in the future.
