There are a vast range of RV's that can go Off Road In Australia, but unfortunately unavailable in the US.

I'm hoping to do some boondocking out west on BLM land with my Dodge Dakota v8 and 17' Casita fiberglass egg trailer. The truck isn't four wheel drive and the trailer hasn't been altered to have a high lift axle (yet) so that'll limit me, but the idea of free or nearly free camping out in the middle of nowhere is just so appealing.

You don't need a 4x4 camper or a pup to go off road, you just need to be a bit adventurous. We use to take our 13 ft Cree down 4x4 trails and the new 25 ft has been on trails that were no more than a pair of tire tracks already.
I will scout roads before we take the TT down them but we are not afraid of a bit of roughness to get to the perfect spots. It's slow gong and we fill in deep ruts and move big rocks but we get where we want to eventually.

We had a 13 foot including hitch "Roust a bout" which we used for 20 plus years off road and in the wilds of Baja--Mexico.
Had many many modifications to running gear and interior..
Example; Springs--originally 3 leaf--broke them, replaced with 6 leaf with axel under the springs- After about 10 years broke these springs, replaced entire spring system which was working when we sold the trailer.
Tires were 3 sizes larger than stock--had to cut out the wheel wells
etc etc
when we sold it the trailer appeared as if it had been produced in 1912 and gone through 10 battles--but it would track behind our 4X4 where there were no trails..
Keep it small, Keep it simple, make it rugged --and carry a tool box & spare parts

We do a lot of rough road camping -- we have modified our stock Fun Finder for that purpose. If you have a few minutes, check out the blog links below.
But if you are serious about getting as far away from pavement as you can (and if you can't afford to import an Australian caravan), I would recommend a truck camper on a 4X4.

We've done quite a bit of off-roading with our Casita (just returned from the factory where we had to have a stabilizer jack and propane tank holder replaced. ) It can go anywhere the 4x4 Tahoe can. It's also very sturdy. In four years, we've only popped one rivet. The above damage was due to pilot error.

If you search under my NAME on RV NET Forums , or search for OFF ROAD CARAVANS;OFF ROAD Campertrailers(Folding Trailers) you will get some.
ARB organize OFF ROAD events and seminars in the US for Springs , canopies etc. There are HUNDREDS of OFF ROAD RV suppliers in Australia, to see if they supply to the US is another matter.
Here are some examples:

RobertRyan is off road camping. That is what I consider off road camping. I think we have to be specific about off road camping. We off road camped in our younger days with a TC. I would not take my Jayco on those off road camping trips. I had no problem driving through streams with my TC but wouldn't do it with a TT unless I had one like in the photo.
Some Rvers would consider just driving up to my ranch off road camping. That is just gravel and dirt roads not really what I consider off road camping.
