Yesterday I was tinkering in our trailer, putting in new drawers and what not, I had to move the CO detector over a few inches and I noticed on there It was manufactured in 2008, our trailer is a 2010 and it expired in 2012?  So the thing is already 2 years old before they install it in an rv,I would think that they would have a longer life span than 4 years, any of you folks replace them after they expire? or you just leave it be, and hope nothing will happen.

I just found the same thing with our propane detector in our 5th wheel and replaced it. Of course it is 18 years old, and I am sure that it was the one that came in it when it was built. Gee, they don't last any time at all.

Just a fyi, CO is carbon monoxide. C02 is carbon dioxide.

My LP detector has timed out as well. Also, an error with the sink caused it to have water running through & no longer works. I noticed there is now an affordable LP/CO detector combo available that fits in the same slot as the old LP one. I will be getting it once the 5th comes out of storage.

I'd rather wake up knowing I spent money on a CO unit that I may never need, than NOT WAKE UP !

It's been my understanding that 5-7 yrs is the average life span of carbon monoxide detectors and 5-10 yrs on smoke detectors after they have been put in service. The owners manual may offer this info. If not, contact the manufacture. We replace the detectors,(all)in our rv at 5-7 years.

I test mine in TT and house each spring when I dewinterize TT. If test button works, I'm happy. Smoke detectors in my house now 25 years old. Don't think I ever replaced any detectors due to age.

I used to sell these. In many of the old detectors all the test button did is check the beeper - they don't necessarily test the detection circuit.
More than likely they are no good anymore and replacements are not only cheap, but better performing than the old ones.

Could you post some information on this unit.
Propane is heavier than air (1.5 times as dense). In its raw state, propane sinks and pools at the floor. A detector should be mounted at floor level.
Carbon Monoxide is lighter than air would accumulate at the ceiling It would fill the sleeping space from the ceiling down and by the time it reached the LP gas detector mounted at the floor level, you would have probably been overcome. That is why the detector must be mounted at the highest level possible.
I am interested how a combo unit would work.
