Read Sticky One and Sticky Two at the top of this discussion area. You will learn much more that you think you already know by reading them.

Lots of supporting documentation from the many satisfied users who frequent this forum and other RV forums. And in the RV field, about the only other supporting documentation you are going to find is dealers and manufacturers blowing their own horns. So when you find many happy customers praising the accolades of a product around here, you know it is well worth it.

Here's another response that doesn't answer your question: Ready Brake users apparently like them becasuse they're simple.

Just because it is simple doesnt mean it is bad. As one great engineer once said: "The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain."

Good luck getting your (original) brake controller question answered.

I was interested in the alternatives, and I sure got a lot of feedback in that department!

Went through them twice already - gonna do it one more time to make sure it all sunk in!

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty, using a ``US Gear Unified Brake`` .This is my first trip with it and it seems to be working fine. I have towed from Vancouver Island and am currently in Valdez Alaska. It is not surge brakes and remains in the toad all the time, meaning no installing every time you hook up.

to answer your question - I believe the type of brake controller you are thinking of is electrical in nature. Trailer brakes operate on that basis. Toad brakes are hydraulic and are a totally different thing.

Is there one out there that will tie into the truck's brake controller (as in a brake controller that is used with 5th wheel) ? It seems to be that would be a no brainer, but then again, motor homes probably dont have a brake controller as I rarely see them pulling 5'ers - but I have seen quite a few pulling large trailers that I would expect would have electric brakes.

I've always thought it to be a good idea to design a toad braking system that could use the input from a standard brake controller to provide proportional toad braking. Then again, I've always thought it would be a good idea to have design and build standards for toad braking systems (like every other braking and towing component made) and some independant test data for these systems. We as consumers pretty much have to rely on manufacturer claims and reviews on forums, like this one.

Hmmm...maybe I should go invent one?

I don't have a toad yet. When I get one I will use This brake system. ReadyBrake seems simple, reliable, effective and realtively inexpensive.

Wouldnt that be activated when running the exhaust brake down hill and cause the toad's brakes to burn up?

On edit - I see the manufacturer's web site says it wont, but I would be interested in supporting documentation from some other source.

Works like any other "surge" brake system, how many of those have you heard of causing brake burn out?

We have surge brakes on our dolly and love em, very simple no add on required in the coach or anything else I decide to hook it up to.

My Ready Brute system does not engage the toad brakes going down hills. There is a spring in the mechanism that pushes the toad back. When I first used it on the DP, when the engine brake forced the first big downshift, the toad brake light would stay on until I hit a bump or tapped the foot brake. I loosened the adjustment 1/4" and it stopped doing it. You have an LED on your dash connected to the toad brakes.
