I have been looking at a few older motorhomes and many of them have cracked, peeling or broken off decals and stripes. What is the best and easiest way to remove them? I once had old decals wet sanded off of my boat (by marina) and was wondering is that a good way? I probably just remove them all but that might not look right, where is there a source for new stripes?

The easiest way I have found is with a 3M disc #07517. Be careful with speed or it can burn the finish.
It is possible the coach mfg. may have new ones available, if not there are many sources on the net under Vinyl graphics.

I used my power washer and it took about an hour for one side of a 40 foot coach with lots of decals on the lower part of the coach. The only problem is going behind that with cleaner to remove the adhesive that was left.

This how I did mine on a trailer. Worked well.

One thing to remember that on older decals when you remove them you most likely wil have a ghost impression left. The result of the difference between the exposed surface weathering and what was under the decals.

I removed the decals from my '03 Phaeton with a heat gun and plastic ice scraper. There was virgin gelcoat underneath the decals. There definitely was a "ghost" impression of where the decals were. We had identical graphics painted on at Red Bay, AL by Bruce Deaton.

Here I am removing the decals with the heat gun:

Here you can see the virgin shiny gelcoat. Big difference between the protected area and the weathered area next to it:

Here is one side of the rig with all vinyl graphics removed:

Here is one side of the rig after new paint job:

We are very happy with the results.

This company removed our old decals, printed new ones and installed them. They did a great job. The site also shows you how to remove them yourself and you can order their standard replacement stripes and decals to install yourself. RV Stripes and Graphics
