We recently purchased a used motorhome with a roof top mounted in-motion satellite tv system. The previous owner would take his Direct tv service box from his home and use it in the motorhome when traveling. We have cable service at home, so we will need to get sat service & a box somewhere. I've tried calling Direct tv but they would not talk to me about setting up service for an RV. I would have to be permanently parked or purchase my own equipment for them to help me. Maybe I called the wrong number because I know RVer's use Direct Tv all the time. I see all kinds of Direct tv equipment for sale on EBAY, but I'm not sure what I need since I'm not too familiar with Direct tv. Can somebody point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Dump the cable at home, get Direct or Dish for your home. Then simply take a box from home for each TV you want to watch. Easy.

What he said.

No sense in paying for two services.

Dish Network's Pay-As-You service would be another option if you don't want to dump your home cable completely.

You can have them send you the receiver then hook it up yourself. Tell them you don't need installation. Make sure the receiver is the basic one (not HD). It's not that difficult to set up. Even if you get DirecTV at home, I would get an additional receiver and leave it in the RV so you don't have to hook it up each time. Additional receiver rental is about $6.00 per month. If you decide to get DirecTV at home and you get a good installer, they might hookup the RV for you also.

Actually you can use a Direct TV HD receiver with a dome or external 18 inch SD dish.
I have an HR24 HD receiver that I use with an external 18 inch dish on the rare occasion whne the Winegard SK3005 automatic dish on the roof is blocked by trees.

There are provisions in the Menu to select the 18 inch dish and hide the HD channels in the guide so they don't clutter the guide up.
