I have a 30` KZ 5th wheel toy hauler.
It has a 8 x 16 carefree awning with several small holes in it.
I`m going to buy some of the repair tape from Walmart unless there is a better option.
Where is the best place to purchase a replacement awning?
Is the awning easy enough to replace at home?

Thanks, Dennis

I've replaced two of them over the years. Buy the awning and tube together, it' more expensive but a lot easier. Several places on the net sell them and all you need are basic tools and ability to work from the roof. You'll need a helper.

Do a Google search or search here for "awning repair" or "awning replacement" and you'll get lots of hits. It's not difficult, but is clumsy to handle the awning material and roller with three hands. You'll need someone to help you. I also saw a couple of videos on YouTube about how to do it. If you only have a few small holes, I recommend the tape thing and forget about replacing it until it tears badly.

I recently gave these directions to someone else on the RV Net, and he wrote me back and thanked me, as he said he was done in an hour. This is how I helped my neighbor replace two awnings. You will need two helpers. Flip "open catch" and pull awning about about 2 or 3 inches. Unhook bottom end of legs and drop leg to ground using extension legs to take weight of awning. Unbolt top bolts to trailer and take out screw that keeps awning in place from sliding back and forth. Get one person on each end of awning and slide it out of track. Lay awning on ground and place a block of wood or a pail under each end near tube. DO NOT TRY TO TAKE AWNING ARMS OFF ENDS OF SHAFT.KEEPING IT ATTCHED KEEPS SPRINGS FROM UNWINDING. Unwrap fabric from tube. Drill out pop rivets at rear,non-catch end of tube. Slide end cap off tube 2 or 3 inches to allow clearance to slide fabric off.(DO NOT PULL ALL THE WAY OUT AS SPRING WILL UNWIND. SPRING IS ABOUT 18 INCHES LONG.) Slide new fabric on, and re wrap fabric. Slide end cap in place and pop rivet. Get one person at each end of awning support, and have third on ladder to guide awning into rail. Once awning is in place, bolt to trailer, center fabric between supports and install screw. Lift legs in to lower catches. Flip ratchet lock and awning will close. This way you do not have to deal with springs.

Well dr quick has his way and I have mine. I am 70, and my wife and myself did one ourselves. I believe it is easier to take the tension off of the springs. The way I did that was to attach a pair of vise grip pliers on the shaft then while holding them remove the screw holding the cast aluminum block. You can then carefully unwind the pliers to take tension off the spring. Count how many turns (usually about 13) so you can get proper tension when reinstalling. Do be careful not to let the pliers slip from your grip, as it will spin and may cause serious injury or at least cause you to use some form of verbage. BTW if the holes are in the first six inches or so from where it attaches to the trailer, you can take it to a tarp shop and have them cut that strip off and sew in a new bead. When I had mine done they charged $50 to repair it and that small portion is not missed. Do be careful though.

Thanks for all of the tips and links,
I`m sure I`ll tackle it myself when the time comes.
Any suggestions for buying the replacement awning?
I`ve bought somethings from AdventureRV.net and rvwholesalers.
Who has the best prices on replacement awnings?

Thanks again, Dennis

I ordered mine from PPL, I think it was around $150.00 a couple years ago. The insurance co. paid for it because of the rider I have on the policy. They would have paid for material and labor but I wanted the experience of installing it.
