I started two batches of wine this past long weekend and in five weeks we should be enjoying some nice home-made wine! My question to my fellow snowbirds is anyone else doing this and how do you store the wine,in what quanities, how does it travel? I'm planning on building a pop-up coffee table for our fiver that i can store my bottles of wine standing straight up inside, any thoughts??

Thanks in advance!

Home made wine needs to age at least 6 months, but better still 1 year after bottled, and kept on its side, so that the cork does not dry
not to mention, kept at a constant temp
Have made wine from kits for a few years now, 30 bottles a batch

Right, Depending on the kit you bought (Concentrate or Concentrate juice blend)
Concentrate can usually be consumed much younger (3 months) Blends or pure juice should age six months to a year. Twist cap is fine to store straight up. Corked bottles should be on their side. Another tip, after corking leave the bottles verticle for three to five days then, lat them on their side.
I work in a winery. Also, " DO NOT" let the bottles get warm. You'll be popping corks all over the place not to mention ruining the wine.

I live in British Columbia.

My experience is that I can purchase wine in the USA at Costco, Walmart etc. for about the same price as it costs me to purchase kits and make them at home.

The wine making process is a very simple. It is time consuming only in the fact that it takes weeks to months for the finished wine to be bottled and ready to drink. The step-by-step process, in and of itself, is fairly simple and only takes a few minutes during each required step.

Hate living in the house which is like a box.

My experience with BCers in Yuma was great fun. They never worried about corks as most wine was in gallon jugs with screw tops!

Well in Southern Texas the Ontario Snowbirds replace the glass bottle with a cardboard box. I guess the same box in the states for $9 cost $40 north of the border. What we view as cheap wine, is seen different at that price.

For my own info, how much liquor can you bring into the US? Going north we're only allowed 1 liter/person (as I remember.)

wish I lived next to the Michigan border and could get the Kroger milk for 2.49. Just bought a gallon today for the grandkids-4.47 those cows must live in true luxury, along with the chickens cause eggs are over 3.00 a doz.
We just buy our wine in the grocery store in california. Seems fine to use at about 6.00 a bottle and no waiting to drink it! Guess we have no patience! Dona
