I've pretty much decided on a F-150 EB Supercab for the next tv.
With 3.55 gears it has a tow capacity of 9700#, GCWR of 15,400# with the tow package.
3.73's and the Max package gets a 11,300# tow rating and 17,100# GCWR.
My current HTT weighs 3850# dry, 5,000# gross (I never did weigh it.) A 5-er is not in our plans but a bigger TT may be. It would probably be 25' or so, maybe 8,000# max gross.
So - I really don't think I need the Max tow package. It's DW & me, no kids, one (diabetic) cat, and a canoe. Yeah, nobody wishes for less truck when they're towing but it'll be my daily driver too. And there are more trucks w/ the standard tow packages on the lots than ones with the Max package. I'll transfer the Prodigy brake controller and McKesh mirrors from my current tv.
Am I missing anything here?

Hi, we purchased a 2012 f150 screw 4x4 ecoboost with a 3.73 rear end and max tow package. We just ordered our trailer yesterday so I can not comment on how well the truck tows. We purchased this truck as a daily driver and will use it to tow 4 or five times a year. We decided the max tow package for the price was worth it. I work in the automotive industry and having the max towpkg with help with resale as well. I can tell you this is one nice truck. I am averaging 13.4 liters per 100 kms in the city with it.

Max tow will give you about 400lbs more payload. Figure around 17-1850lbs for maxt tow. 1400lbs for reg tow. Now take that future 8000lb TT and figure 1000lbs for tongue weight. You have 400lbs left. That could be you, the spouse and a 75lb canoe. Nothing else. Get the maxtow if you can.

Yes.
A calculation of the actual payload / axle load on the vehicle for both scenarios, showing how much overhead you have got if you went one way or the other.
Then a judgment call as to how much safety margin you can live with --- at present, and if you traded trailers.

go with max tow you get extra cooling capacity
also give the HD ( Heavy Duty ) max tow a look ...worth the extra $$
plus with getting a x-pin number you can save that back in how much you save ( http://www.blueovalforums.com/forums/index.php?/forum/45-ford-x-plan-pin-requests/)

Go with a 3/4 ton truck if your going that heavy. When Ford has to start reporting capacities with the new rules all of this is going to drop down anyway.

I'd go with the +8K GVWR truck no matter what marketing badge you call them

Hi I have a 2011 Ecoboost 4x4 with the max tow package and 3.73 gears, we tow a 32 ft Cougar xlite about 8K total 6500 or so dry, I can tell you from experience that this truck tows this trailer with ease, we live in Western Pa with alot of hills and never once has this truck felt fatigued at any grade so far, we took it to Tennessee for Bonarroo and while we only got about 9 or 10 mpg s never once did it struggle with any of the hills we encountered. One complaint I have is with the mirrors, they stick out much to far for everyday city driving this is when there not extended! One does NOT need to pull them out for towing a TT, maybe if we had a 5th wheel we would but for a regular TT definitely not. Other than that we love this truck. Good luck with your purchase!

OK, the consensus is go with the Max package. But:
It's interesting the standard tow ratings are the same with 3.55 and 3.73 gears. I've looked at a lot of window stickers on line and have never seen a truck with 3.73's w/o having the Max package.
One TT we looked at spec'd at 6000# dry, 8000# gross, and we wouldn't be putting 2,000# in it. 7,000# gross would probably be a more realistic figure.
The current trailer will be a walk in the park for the EB.
I asked the Ford chat line about why the increase with the Max tow and was told they use a larger radiator than in the standard tow package (51 tubes vs 41 tubes) - no change in springs, axles, or tires.
BTW - You need the 3.73 gears to get the Max package and they're $200+ more than the 3.55's. And the Max package is another $550+ over the standard package on top of that.
uterep - I can get X-plan from work but the dealer is below that price already.
parkersdad - GM's 2013 ratings dropped minimally and they have nothing to compete with the EB. I'd be surprised if Fords ratings take a drastic drop.
BenK - I could go with a D/A and end it all but it would be overkill for the purpose and on my wallet!
Hey - I'm towing with a 4.2 / 3.42 Envoy now, anything will be an improvement!
