Go with a 3/4 ton truck if your going that heavy. When Ford has to start reporting capacities with the new rules all of this is going to drop down anyway.

Keep in mind, the new rules are not required or Law. The MFG's volunteered to use the SAE guildlines to establish tow ratings. I know the Big 3, and Toyota have commited, not sure who else has.

Have had my 2012 eco/max tow for 6 weeks and lovin it. Took our trailer to Kentucky few weeks ago and was best trip we have taken there. TT is approx 7800lbs. and 32ft long. Very stable and controlled drive.I have the tow mirrors and agree with tr1jr2 on their size but I didn't want to deal with them wiggling while trying to use them. Also wanted the 36gal. tank and only way to get it at the time was with 4x4, but can't say I am disapointed With the S/crew and 4x4 mileage suffers a litle-18mpg on my 40 mile roundtrip to work daily but is still better than the 98 suburban I had before it. Towing I managed to hit 9mpg, about the same as the 'burb. But this vehicle was built for towing first-mpg second in my case.

The HD Payload package comes automatically with 3:73's and the larger rear pumkin. Ford makes it too easy!

I am a huge fan of more payload for half tons, and Ford's max trailer towing and HD payload packages. However, for your situation, two adults and a Supercab, you should have 1700 pounds of payload the regular version. Supercrew plus families are where they run out of payload quicker because they have less, 1400-1500 for XLTs and down to 1200 for loaded up Lariats and Platinum models.

speaking from experience towing 7000lbs regularly, get the max tow with 3:73 gears for the following reasons:

1. payload will be around 1900lbs, enought to cover 1000lbs of TW + the towing gear + passengers
2. 3:73 gears in a truck this heavy will actually help your fuel economy and make towing more of a pleasure
3. Max tow includes an uprated radiator, transmission cooler and a beefier hitch

If you forsee actually towing an 8000+ lb trailer, go with the 8200lb payload package option, this will give you a much more capable truck. Had that option been available in 2011 for the supercrew, i'd have a Lariat with that package now. Also, food for thought, i just put on the factory towing mirrors and i absolutely recommend them for anyone towing - great rarward visibility.

I'm told and believe it to be true that the unloaded ride quality is better Hard to argue since I had an '07 CC F150 XLT and it was a much nicer ride unloaded than my F350 - it was a fantastic truck.
