Glad I'm not on Long Island. If I was to be happy on any island it would need to be in the South Pacific

One of the great things on RV.net is you get to virtually experience other camping styles and other destinations.
MD has nice variety of camping available. I am 1-3 hours of beach camping, lake camping mountain camping and everything in between. Full hooks,no hooks ups we pretty much have it all.
Maybe not the greatest of any particular type but the variety of types is all here.
To the OP as others implied take the drive/adventure and exploring is all a part of it. There is another forum member Burbman who just moved off of Long Island. He traveled all over from Long Island.
Don't trap yourself behind those dunes Expand your horizon's there is a whole world of campgrounds out there! One of the best features of any RV is the wheels!

Just as a point of reference, below is where we camped last month right on the beach here in CA. Our RV is parked in the sand about 30 feet behind the guy in the chair (me). We watched whales go by through the dinette window as we ate lunch:

Are you camping at Aptos, near the Cement ship? I cant think of anything near Santa Cruz, we stayed in Boulder Creek last year, pretty much like the OP, real expensive land..

We were camping around 250 miles South of Aptos near the end of a one week RV trip to see the annual poppy bloom in Southern CA. During the earlier days of the trip we camped in somewhat obscure inland areas of CA in State and Federal campgrounds with very few other campers in them.

I'm 1hr 15 mins to the coast, 2 hrs to the mtns and 3-1/2 hrs to the desert. I could never just go to the same ole spots. Thats part of the fun of having an RV , being able to travel to somewhere new and different. DSFDF I guess.

As an ex East Coaster I'm pretty aware of how different things are between these two areas. On my first trip back east after 15 years out here I was truly shocked at how close together things were back east. It's a different world "Out West." The only thing I've ever missed from back east was the wonderful fragrance of your leaves in the fall of the year. But you've got some pretty nice country back there. Some East Coast people think parts of our West are a bit stark and bare but you soon get used to it. After all, everything can't be a lush green hardwood forest.

Long Island has some beautiful spots. If you want to get away, leave in the early hours of the AM, when traffic is light so you can enjoy the ride. We live in the boonies, but usually have to go thru a city somewhere to ge to our destination. Driving thru cities at 3:00 AM is a breeze. Most of the time, the CG destinations we go to allow us to pull in early when we get there.
I live 20 minutes from the ocean, well, 20 minutes in the off season. During the summer, it turns into 1.5 hrs on average due to traffic, so we usually head the other way during peak season (head for the hills) There are some great CG's not too far from you in NW NJ and the Poconos. Nice size sites, hookups, and cool mountain breezes to take place of that pounding surf.

Full timing it since July 2012 My pics

You say you don't camp off the Island but your map looks like you've camped all up and down the east coast!
