Does anyone tow with this set up and if so what do you tow?Just purchased a very nice low mile truck with this set up.It was such a good deal I couldn't pass up.The truck is 12 yrs old with 63K miles on it and looks as if its only 2 yrs old.The person I bought it from ordered it new with the towing package, but didn't get a hitch with it.He never towed anything with it,it still has the rubber gromett in the bumper too.Its a single cab, long bed,4x4.Thanks for any replies

I hope you're not replacing an '06 5.9 Cummins 2500 with a 5.4 F-250???????? Am I understanding you??? Sounds like a bad move if that's the case IMHO.

That said, had a 5.4 L in an '03 Expedition we owned, IMHO the 5.4 would be under-powered in a 3/4 ton truck like the F250. I'm sure there are some that tow with that set up, but to take advantage of that added payload....I'd want more engine than the 5.4. If heavy towing/hauling is not the intention for the truck, it may be a great deal by what you've explained. If you want a real work horse, I think you'll be disappointed.

Within its limits it will tow fine.

Get the specific factory recommended maximums off the door sticker.

Verify that nothing changed to alter that (e.g. lower rated tires).

Then do the math for the tow rating and your specific proposed load.

The older trucks have more leeway because they are pre-tow rating boosting game.

In my estimation, it won't get out of it's own way. I once had an F250 4X4 with the towing package and a 302. Worst truck I ever had for power/ability. JMHO

Depends on what you want to do with it. I have owned two F-250 SuperDuty's with the 5.4L and towed with them. If it is a pre-2005 it has the 2v 5.4L which made 265 HP and 350 ft lbs torque and will be good up to about 7500 lbs and be a very stable towing platform.

The 2 valve is a very durable engine that can be pushed quit hard.

3 valve have more peak HP, but I think (not sure) it also have the dreaded spark plug problem.

So it is which problem you wish to have --- I have had good luck with the 5.4 2 valve towing up to 7,000lbs on a E platform.

Ok I am going against the Naysayers here. It will be fine as long as you expect small V8 performance.

At the very least you have 3.73 rear axle ratio which is a good all around axle ratio. You may even have a 4:10 or 4:30 rear axle.

The 5.4 that was in the F150 / Expeditions often were coupled with 3:31 axle ratio. these "will not get out of their own way".

You truck is a different beast.

You have the lightest weight superduty which means you have the most possible payload for your F250.

Will you be able to tow 12k lb fiver? Well I think that's a bit much. But for around 7500-9000 lb you should be perfectly fine.

Let the 5.4 work nothing wrong with it. It has a very flat torque curve which makes it an ideal working motor. (for a gasser).

Thanks and enjoy your new to you purchase

Thanks!

Jeremiah

We have literally hundreds of F-350 Crew cab 4x4 long bed trucks powered by the 5.4 engine, from 2004 onward. They are equipped with snow plows in the winter and tow 27 foot box trailers set up to carry landscaping equipment in the summer, usually weighed down quite heavily. These trucks are utterly reliable. They may not be climbing big hills at 70mph but then again they are fine for our needs. They will be replaced as they hit time/mileage life limits with F-350 6.2 gas engine trucks.
