Ok guys and gals, the backflow check valve on my shore water connection went south. I removed it and replaced the check valve part, and now need to re-install it. I need to know what to use to waterproof around the fixture on the outside wall. I want something that I can remove in the future for the next time I have to re-build it. Also, I know that silicone is bad stuff because it makes it nearly impossible to seal in the future.

If you have some type of escutcheon on the exterior I would think a rubber gasket would work if it needs to be removed.....but how often do they go out.

3m 5200 usually requires a hammer and chisel to remove.

The butyl tape was not going to work because of the design of the flange so I bought Dicor Non Sag. I figure that if it works on the roof, it should work on the side wall.

I have switched to using GE Premium Silicon for such projects. It is 100% silicon so it never hardens and is not difficult to remove in the future. I would not use a silicon acrylic blend. 3M 4500 works well but I have had problems with its short life - it must be used within 24 hours after opening the tube.

Not really a fan of using any silicon caulking product anymore. While it was once the darling of sealing products; it no longer is.
Main problem with silicon caulking compounds is once you use them it's a very real problem reusing them on the same area. Even Eternabond will not stick to areas where silicon has been used.
Not to mention silicon does attract dirt and over time discolors and next to impossible to clean back to it's original color; unless you use a black compound.
The previous poster was correct in thing about silicon caulk. Definitely stay away from any caulk label acrylic blend. Acrylic compounds are normally added to allow it to be painted, BUT it also allows for the caulk to dry and harden. This is not what you want on something that moves and vibrates and will cause cracking of the caulk.
As for Butyl, make sure you are using a Butyl tape not a butyl putty tape. The putty, colored gray and about the consitancy of modeling clay also discolors over time and will ooze from mating pieces over time as well. RV builders like it as it's easy to work with, CHEAP, and most times lasts as long as their warranty.
The Dicor no sag, and proflex caulks are designed for RV usage and IIRC are polyurathane caulks. Caulks labeled as poly sufides will work but are desinged to bed items that are not to be removed and is considered a permanent caulk. Yhis type is usually found in marine usage for bedding in permanent deck fixtures.

Dumb question. If it isn't for decorative use and isn't exposed to sunlight, would not an aerosol foam product work OK? Or does it too have problems when removing?
