Neither Edmund's nor consumer Report think very highly about the Grand Vitara. Her is a brief summary from Edmund's Quote: What Edmunds Says
Aside from its capability as a light-duty off-road vehicle, the 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara is outclassed by most other compact SUVs on the market.
Pros
Extensive standard features list; lengthy powertrain warranty; large cargo capacity; strong brakes.
Cons
Underpowered; lack of interior storage compartments; right-hinged cargo door makes street-side loading a hassle; limited long-distance comfort.
Cnsumer Report's summary is similar.

We've been towing an 03 Suzuki XL7 now for 8 years without a hitch, great toad highly recommend them.
As another member mentioned, easy to tow, put transfer case in neutral, gear selector in Park, ignition switch in accessory position to unlock steering wheel and then just go. Another nice feature, odometer doesn't register while towing.
Owners manual calls for every 200 miles to start engine put gear selector in drive and run engine for a few minutes for lubrication.
Every time we pull into a rest stop, usually less than 200 miles I go through the engine start-up routine.
They also recommend not to tow over 55mph, however we usually cruise between 58 & 62 and so far no negative results.
Good luck with your choice of toads and safe travels.

My Liberty weighs 3700 lbs and there are Jeep dealers all over the place. No fuses to pull....no start the engine after X amount of miles...none of that garbage. Thats why I bought it!....

I have a 2006 Grand Vitara. In 60,000 miles, it has served me well. The dealer network is a joke. If Suzuki has tripled its dealer network in recent years, then that means there are now 3 dealers within 200 miles of me. All three Suzuki dealers in the greater Sacramento area who existed since I bought my GV have closed their doors. On the upside, Suzuki builds cars and trucks to last so having a dealer less than a days drive might only be a issue for parts needed in a hurry or warranty work.
Ironically, even with the pathetic dealer setup, I am looking to buy the new edition of the GV (maybe 2013 or 2014 at the latest). The vehicle has a real 4WD running gear with transfer case neutral and the truck frame makes it both road and offroad worthy. It is not a rock climber and that is OK with me. The reviews that call it under powered are meaningless to me. It accelerates well and easily hauls at its rated capacity. The V6 has always delivered 18-20 mpg. The comment about long distance comfort is subjective. We have taken it on 3,500 mile trips. I like the seat and my wife does not.
I am in the middle of setting mine up for towing as we speak. Blue Ox baseplate, Readybrake Elite towbar/brake, Blue Ox aux tail light setup.
