I am wondering if anyone is towing their pop-up trailer with a Honda Pilot 2WD vehicle? My Honda Odyssey has been an excellent tow vehicle with it's WD hitch, Prodigy brake controller etc. I am concerned that the specs on the Honda Pilot 2WD are not as good as the Odyssey. Looking at the 2012 Honda Pilot manual, it states that the 2WD model max tow is 2,000 lb. unless we add the optional ATF cooler which bumps it up to about 3,100 lb. for 4 people in the vehicle. The GVWR of the pop-up is 3072.

We were all set to go purchase the Pilot this weekend with all the great deals since it is a holiday weekend, but now I am concerned it won't be able to cut the mustard like our Odyssey which zipped up mountain passes.

Thank you.

Oh wow. I wouldn't want to be in that situation again. I had a tow vehicle rated for 3,500 lbs. and my pup's GVWR was 2,800 lbs. and it struggled dearly. If you load any gear and get anywhere close to the Pilot's rating, you're going to HATE any hills or head winds, etc.

Any reason you won't buy another Odyssey? We have one and love it, and will get another when we replace it.

Are you sure it's 3100? The accessory Pilot Tranny cooler I read about said 3500. Or maybe you are automatically subtracting the average 4 people in the car weight already?

Isn't the Odyssey also rated 3500? I was thinking they were equal not one better than the other. Thanks.

The Oddy has more potential to be the better TV but the Pilot will have no problem at all towing a your PU. We have the same size/power of V6 engine in our TV and tow a much larger trailer and there is no problem at all. The power to weight ratio is very. Go for it.

All vehicles with a 3,500lb tow rating are not created equally.

What vehicle were you using??

Ford Explorer v6 4.0L at the time. 3,500 lbs. capacity without adding any additional ugprades or tow packages.

I understand all vehicles and even implementations of the same engine are equal. Quite a few variations exist even with the same engine - I see that with my current vehicle's engine used in it's different implementations.

Thnxs, this is my point. A 1994 Ford Explorer with a 4.0V6 had 160 HP and 220 foot-pounds ot TQ. All that lame power was in one of the poorest SUV's ever made. No wonder you were not happy with the towing ability/performance.

On the other hand the 2012 Honda Pilot has a 3.5 V6 with
250 hp / 253 ft-lbs/tq
. With all it's modern technology and power it will work great as a TV.
