What's the difference. Can we burn it in our DP?

Diesel Fuel is what a diesel engine uses for compression combustion.
DEF is the Diesel Exhaust Fluid made from Urea that lowers the emmissions of new diesel engines equipped with DEF tanks. The EPA mandates it in certain engines. Urea itself is NOT a fuel...it goes into it's own storage tank and is injected along with the fuel for clean air.
My posts shouldn't be taken for factual data. They are purely fictional, for entertainment purposes and should not be constituted as actually related to scientific, technical, engineering, legal, spiritual or practical advice. Amen.

If you accidentally add DEF to a diesel fuel tank, you will need to have the tank drained and cleaned.
If you started the diesel engine with say 5 gallons of DEF in a 100 gallon tank that might have 25 gallons of diesel still left in the tank, and say make it about 2 miles from the fuel station before figuring out that was a bad idea to try driving away, the DEF liquid will have mixed with the returning fuel, may have plugged the water separator, if you are lucky.
So if your RV does not have a DEF tank, you can not use it to improve the emissions on your RV, it is not injected into the engine itself, but rather to a special catalyst that is located in the exhaust system that will clean up the exhaust stream, and remove particulates from the exhaust stream.

The difference is DEF will kill your diesel engine.

CORRECT. Was talking with a friend who is Service Manager at a metro Ford dealership. They have three new diesel F350's getting new engines because the owner put DEF in the fuel tank. Very corrosive stuff.

DEF is water based and will not mix with desiel. It would fill up your water separator and possibly get in the injection system and cause catastrophic failure.

DEF is not fuel! It's an additive for diesels that require it. Hard to beleive that anyone would confuse DEF as diesel fuel....

Part of the problem is some think it's an "additive" that is added to the fuel tank. When it's actually a separate tank (like a windshield washer tank) with an injection system, only found on new engine systems.
If you don't have the DEF tank, it's NOT for you.

For folks like me who had zero experience with diesel engines and fuel before getting into a DP, it's understandable. I had no reason to know what DEF was until I nearly made a catastrophic mistake at a fueling island.

Two different things go into two different tanks on modern diesels.
Diesel FUEL is what makes it go. if you pull into a lane with DEF pumps this means there is a 2nd pump (Though it may be in the same pump housing) with a 2nd hose JUST for DEF, different type of nozzle, little chance of confusing them.
You simply do not use the DEF hose or pump.. USe only the big D hose and pump.
That said... I drive a Gasser. .I use the Gas hose and pump
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business
