We have been thinking about getting a used class A. Prefer gas but would go diesel if it was a good deal. I saw a 2000 Alpine coach. Is that a western RV product. Aren't they out of business? I saw another coach that said it was a cummins diesel 225 HP. Is that a miss print. I thought the small cimmins for the rv's were 300 hp and up.

All MH options vary a lot based on year of build.

What is your projected MH buying budget and floor plan needs are your to main things to figure out I think.

I'd be pretty surprised if any Alpines came with a 225HP engine. That said, a 225HP diesel mh will likely still have more torque (and would likely get much better mileage) than any gasser mh.

Not saying that you need to get a diesel but if power is one of your concerns, diesel will probably always beat gas in the mh market.

Western RV is out of business, a victim of the collapse of '08. That being said the coaches are one of the best handling and riding ones out there and are well built. The chassis was manufactured in house and is a 4 air bag with a very long wheelbase for the length of the coach. It does use hydraulic discs on all 4 wheels which work very well if maintained. Getting work done on the coach is no problem at all, our local (town of 16,000) diesel mechanic is more than able to work on any of the engine/trans/braking systems and the rest of the RV with the exception of the body shell is off the shelf parts so any RV place can fix the systems.

For 2000 the 36' models the standard engine was a 275hp/815ft lb ISC, I've never seen one as most were ordered with the optional 330/950 ISC, 38' and 40' models got the 330/950 ISC standard.

More information can be found in the irv2 Alpine forum and the Alpine Coach Tech' pages

We absolutely love our 36' side entry (330/950 ISC) my wife has back issues and hasn't been able to travel for years. So far this year we've spent 18 nights traveling with drives up to 8 hours in duration with no problems, it's that smooth.

As with all coaches previous maintenance is the key. And have it inspected by someone before buying.

We have a Country Coach Allure. Country Coach also went under but a used coach usually isn't covered under warranty anymore anyway. I would buy another Country Coach.

The 225 HP is probably a Cummins 5.9 "B" engine, the smallest used in motorhomes. It could be a very early version of the Cummins 8.3 "C", but as of 1993 the 8.3 was available in 250 and 300 HP versions, so it would have to be earlier than 1993. Both the "B" and "C" engines were mechanical (not computer controled), very reliable and will outlast the coach and probably you if taken care of.

Well, diesels had better get increased gas mileage since diesel fuel costs significantly more than gasoline. And that doesn't even count the cost of cleaning up the fuel that inevitably gets tracked into your coach from around the pumps.

I thik Alpine is a very nice coach. I agree, I'd be surprised if it came with a 225hp engine.
