There are so many sick people in this world who get their jollies by hurting animals - UGH!

Yeah, most of them are carnivores too! Like they actually kill chickens, cows, sheep, pigs, and all kinds of fish and eat them! They aren't nice people like the people here who only eat veggies, weeds, and tree bark.
And they torture the animals for sport before they slaughter them? Get real!

There's a difference between killing an animal quickly in order to eat it, and killing it very slowly because you enjoy watching it suffer!

You seriously believe that in 2012 in America there is a place that is so corrupt and backwards that the mass killing of creatures, even a creature as vile as a snapping turtle, is tortured, maimed, and "murdered" (using your improperly applied term) in public? Really? You believe that?
Or do you just get caught up in the hysteria of a few PETA inspired vague videos and join the howling mob?
Any of you folks ever jump in your RV's and truck out west to watch rodeos? Or do you just get all caught up in the romantic cowboy stuff and give them a pass?

Don't believe everything you read on the internet. Snapperfest involves nothing more than using one's bare hands to pickup a snapping turtle from a tank carry it about 50 feet and then holding it up by it's head. Dangerous , yes, cruel and inhumane, no.

Actually, the objective is for the contestant to wrap his/her hand around the turtles' neck. To accomplish this, they pull on the turtle's head to extend its neck enough so the turtle can be grabbed by the neck. When the turtles are held up, they are held by the neck.

Holding any creature by the neck is certainly inhumane.

Has to be! Thats why dogs and cats carry their young by the neck. Must be to teach them a lesson!

Let's have a mammal class:

In many mammals, the nape is the site of the scruff, a loose, non-sensitive area of skin by which the mother can carry her young, holding the scruff between her teeth. In domestic cats, the scruff is used when a mother cat transfers her kittens to a new nest or den site (carrying each kitten by gripping its scruff in her teeth), and in mating, when the male cat (tom) grips the female cat's scruff with his teeth to help keep her relatively immobile.

-----------------

ok now we know that animals do not encircle the neckbones and make the young hang by those neckbones. if they did they would damage the young.

if anyone thinks for one second that holding something by the neck with the entire weight of the body is swinging in the wind is not harmful, then I say ya'll go out and try it on a family member and lets see those results

Okay, the OP said they heard that the turtles heads and tails were pulled out, and they were smashed on the ground - they asked if it was true. It's been determined that it's not true. Do I want to see a turtle held up by its neck? No. Will it kill them if their necks are stretched to get a a grip on it? No (as mentioned before these things will latch onto a stick and hang there - they can stretch their necks pretty far by themselves).

I've seen more informative threads than this get closed fairly quickly.

If "necks" are your criteria for cruelty, let's revisit calf roping and bull dogging--an age old traditions at every rodeo you will attend. Which of you are ready to criticize this well attended "sporting event"?
I'm betting far more calves die at rodeos annually than snappers at snapperfest. But, but, but, but.....!

You can tell who the individuals are that mistreat animals......they're the ones who wouldn't have the guts to try the same thing with a human.
