Leaving home 2nd week of July heading for Alaska. Going up the Cassier, doing the Alaska thing and coming home the Alaska Highway in September. We have planned the places we want to see, but I have the most important question for you.
What would you say is the one food item along the road you wouldn't want to miss? Those that have been there must have found some item they would have to have again.
I don't want to miss anything exceptional.

Fresh Dungeness crab - anywhere you can find it! Halibut at Corner Cafe Skagway and by all means anything at the 'bus' in Hyder! Diana is the cook and her husband is the fisherman. She is hilareous but slow. Cooks one meal at a time but it is worth it.

robanddi - the Corner Cafe closed a couple of years ago, and the halibut and chips at the place that their sign points you to (next door) is awful. For halibut and chips, the Skagway Brewing Company on Broadway in Skagway and Klondike Ribs & Salmon on 2nd Ave in Whitehorse are by far the best. A surprise to me was the burgers at Jake's Corner on the Alaska Highway - new owners and very good, inexpensive food. In Carcross, new owners at every cafe - Spirit lake Lodge and Montana Services now both have mediocre food and very high prices (and gas at Montana Services is 25 cents per liter higher than Whitehorse - an absolutely gouge on the unwary).

Murray's mention of Klondike Ribs & Salmon in Whitehorse reminds me that I had the BEST lunch there last summer. Delicious! Busy spot and GOOD food.

X2 on Brewery at Skagway. Blue cheese burger at joint next to ferry dock at Whittier. Staying in Skagway, the parks up town are much healthier than near the port. The port had 3 giant cruise ships with engines idleing and laying down soot in the harbor. Enough said.

Well you will be driving in BC to get to Alaska.
Plan a stop at Herbies Drive in in Cache Creek, just North of the Junction of the Trans Canada Highway and Highway 97.
We like the fried chicken (cooked to order), burgers and the real cream soft serve ice cream. Wash it all down with a Quencher.
In July/August there will be lots of fresh BC fruit to be had at road side fruit stands. Some have fresh fruit pies too. Yum.
