Any fix in sight?????????????????????

P.S. Well this posted but not what I really wanted to add re animals on the Alcan!

As posted above in this thread:

The RV.Net portal has issues with certain characters. For example, it can't process percent symbols nor "smart" quotes, both single and double.

If you are having trouble posting through the RV.Net portal to the Open Roads Forum, you should try one of the others; for example, Woodall's

In addition, if the file name for the picture contains a space, many host sites will change that to a %20. The RV.Net portal will not be able to process the %.

Thanks for addressing my problem. Is this something relatively new?

I have tried Woodall's but seems like I had an issue there as well but can't recall what it was ... it is hell getting old and losing one's mind AND memory.

Now to show my true ignorance: What is a smart quote either single or double?

Diann

P.S. I do wish to state how much my husband and I enjoy this forum and that we use it daily assuming we have internet. The moderators do such a good job that, when something hiccups, it is such a surprise and folks like me tend to get bent out of shape. Sorry for that. AND AGAIN THANKS FOR THE GREAT and often thankless job Y'ALL DO.

The problem with the RV.Net portal has started more than 3 weeks ago.

Here is an example of smart quotes (enlarged to make them easier to see)

Here are standard quotes, not enlarged.

"quote"

Many computers change to smart quotes by default. There should be a preference setting to change the behavior.

Got my post and link up right away.

Thanks again for you help and patience.

Yep, problems here too...I've had two lengthy responses that refuse to post in the last few days.

It's frustrating and without doubt alienating a lot of members. Some people type slow, and to spend a half hour constructing a response only to click on "Post message" and have the forum choke on it HAS to be infuriating.

Reading someone elses's reference to the percent symbol here, I removed the percent symbols from my post in question (I had 2) and typed "percent" instead...and it posted just fine.

So something to do with the "percent" symbol is causing the forum to choke.

My last post had a percent symbol in it as well, so it all makes sense now.

(Yep, just confirmed - tried posting this very response with a percent symbol and it wouldn't post...now removed, and watch this...)

The issues with RV.Net has been posted many, many times, look at my post above. We keep telling members to use one of the other portals and they won't have the problem. There's a link to the Woodall's portal in my previous post.

I saw that, but what your suggesting is akin to eBay saying "oh yeah, we know about the issue with ebay.com, so use ebay.ca instead".

In other words, you can yell it from the rooftops, but 90 percent (argh, there's the percent issue again!) of the members still aren't going to do it and are going to have a bad experience as a result.

If the problem is longterm and isn't going to be fixed (why is beyond me) then the techs would be well advised to somehow redirect the rv.net domain to one of the other portal addresses that DO work properly.

Sorry for being blunt, but to let a major issue like this drag on for weeks on a forum the size of RV.net is just inexcusable IMHO. Without doubt hundreds or thousands of posts are being muted each and every day.

I can report it, but I can't fix it. I can suggest workarounds.

I use RV.Net all of the time, it has moderator's functions that the other portals don't.

I also post % without issue. I use a "trick" and I've posted how to do that.

I guess I was piqued by a post about a problem that was made in a thread that already contained the explanation of the problem and a work around. Happens on long days on the road and your water pump fails.

My bad, I did see the part about the smart quotes but somehow missed the percent issue being brought up.

And I can totally relate to reporting an issue but being totally helpless at fixing it - see my signature. Same story, brother, just a different ship.

Anyhow, press the matter in your staff area with the forum owners and reference what I said above. I'm confident a lot of people are getting VERY irritated and just abandoning all efforts to post here. For every 1 member that makes it into the operations forum and reads this, I guarantee you there are 500 more who just get frustrated and logoff.

Many may never come back.
