We are looking at used Class C's and want to stay on the short side since we are used to roughing it out in the woods on dirt roads. Hubby is 6'2" and 240 lbs. Will the overhead bunk hold him? The 3/4 bed in rear corner just isn't long enough...his feet hung off the end. I'm 5'10" and it's ok for me. We have a calif king at home but I haven't seen anything in our price range or a shorter length with a king. Been looking at E450 V10's built after 02 since he said he doesn't want anything gutless when climbing hills like we had before. It was an old 24' with a dodge 360. It was not fun pulling the quads uphill at 25mph. We live in the AZ mountains and camp in the mountains of AZ, UT, CO, NM, and some CA. We also want to occasionally pull our 01 grand cherokee for more off-roading adventures. It's for sure a jungle out there when searching for just the right rv. I've been reading the forum for several weeks now and lots of good information. Maybe we should be looking at Class A's too but I'm thinking I read that Class C's were better for short off-road boondocking overnight. Any and all information will be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Shari in northern AZ

I am 6'2'. 250 lbs. With a 24ft 2001 Coachmen. Catalina Sport. (no rear bed)
I sleep up top, DW on the dinenete bed. Works peachy for us. Have rented one with a corner bed, thought it was miserable. Not to mention loss of interior room with a fixed bed.
Never have had any power issues with the V-10, and have been over most of the steepest passes in the western US

Based on your type of camping, this is just a thought. Consider a TC (truck camper). Reasons:
1) It's the SUV of RVs, ie., Go just about anywhere, any time.
2) You can tow the toys
3) The camper can be dropped at home/campground, freeing up the truck.
And to address your question, most offer a N/S standard 60"x80" queen size bed.

Lazy Daze Class C Motorhomes have a 80" cabover mattress bed with "unlimited weight rating", a 78.9" tall shower, no slideouts for weight savings however the huge windows make up for it! Also a lower overall height than most Class C's for better wind resistance, the sofa bed is 76", and Lazy Daze start at 3 models at 24 Ft...including two with a rear dual sofa dinette that makes into another King sized bed! Used are $24,000 and up.
Be aware these things keep their value a long time...so used prices are higher than ordinary Class C's.

Thanks for the great info. Gives me more things to research and check on. The truck camper is not an option for us although we do have a heavy duty 2500 dodge with a V10. It's an awesome truck but don't want to take it out in the boonies; that's what the jeep is for! lol I'll keep looking at different models and will take along the trusty tape measure when we test drive them.
thanks again,
Shari

We sleep on the over cab of our Triple E. There is no weight restriction that I can find in the manual or capacity sticker inside.
We are 6' 250 lb and 5'4" 200 lb.
No issues.
It is nice to have the long bed.

I'm 6-2 . I sleep in the back bed on diagonal, That makes it long enough. I don't like climbing. Wife is 5-2. She sleeps in dinette bed and cabover is for storage.

Our over head bed has worked out for our friend and his wife. He is 6'4". His son has a problem at 7'1" but has made it.
I agree about the rear corner bed. It is a complete waste of space in a small rig. We went with a rear kitchen with dinette and couch. Wife sleeps on dinette and I sleep on couch. Over head is for storage or friends.. We do lots of dry camping.. Have a rule. If they are over 7' they have to bring their own tent..

We're tall too, I'm 5'11" and DH is 6'5". We have the rear corner bed and love it! Ours is only 74" long (and 54" wide), but I just fit (I sleep on the side against the wall) and DH doesn't usually sleep completely straight (i.e. sleeps on side w/knees bent), so it works for us. We also like the Chevy front (has more leg room), but I don't know if it could handle towing a Grand Cherokee (would guess it couldn't, unless the coach is REALLY small). I think it's hard to find the larger Ford engine on a really short C.
Anyway, we had rented and therefore were confident that we liked the rear corner bed, but we always considered the overhead bunk our backup plan if our main bed started to feel too small (width or length wise). The overhead is SUPER long (>90" in our coach). I think ours has a weight limit of 350#. So, as long as the weight limit isn't an issue the overhead bunk should be plenty long enough. Make sure you verify that the model you're looking at doesn't have built in headboards/cupboards up there (along the mattress) which really shortens the usable length. Also be sure to check that your husband can stand up in the shower (in many RV's, mine cannot).
Coachmen has made a really short unit for the past few years (currently 21QB) that has full-sized queen bed (60x80) in the rear corner. It's a super short RV with huge basement storage. The drawback to the massive storage is there is a step up for the bed/bathroom area in the back which makes the ceiling just barely too low to be comfortable for my husband.

Not all rear queen beds are created equil. Some brands are only 75". Our Sunseeker 2300 is 80". Big difference. The Cabover bed is even longer.
