But guess what happens when I try and charge $50 an hour? I don't get any business because people know the industry standard is $125 and up and they think there must be something wrong with me if I charge less.

Uncle put a "Free" sign on his couch and put on street. No one took it. Put ad in paper, Couch for sale, $20. Sold the next day.

Last time I priced (a few years back) 120-150/hr was the going rate,,

I found one mobile tech for most non-engine work who is 75/hr.

You gotta love the NY surcharge. No wonder no one wants to own a coach in this area. I think it almost pays to drive to Pennsylvania.

Have you also looked at the tax rate, cost of living, realestate prices etc. There Crazy over there

Prices could be varied in each shop... I had to have a tach cable repaired in a local shop that advertised $95 per hour labor. When I picked up my cable, they told me all that they had to do to fix it, then only charged me $35. I pointed at their sign and said I think you undercharged me based on your description of the work. The guy said, "You're fine, that price is for Asshats".... It pays to be nice!!

OP here, first off as I already stated I expect to pay more here on LI, just not double the going rate of other large metropoli. To me if it is more difficult to work on a MH, then it will automatically take them longer to do repairs, therefore that should take care of itself. Now you can't tell me all repairs take longer on a MH just because the engine or chassis is attached to a MH. Why should I pay $162/hr for an oil change, brake job, service the tranny, and so on? I hate being taken advantage of, but then again this post was really just trying to get a feel of rates around the country and nothing more. I would really like to patronize my local shop, but I really will have a hard time justifying this rate.

Comparing NY area prices to the rest of the country is not going to be very fruitful.

Not true. I own a car and an airplane. I fully expect to pay a few more dollars/hr, but I feel that big cities are usually pretty similar in pricing. Flying all over this country, the hourly rate for airplane maintenance is within $20-30/hr. It seems MH maintenance varies a whole lot more. To be honest I feel worse for the owner/operator trucker. He must feel like he is being raped in this area if he breaks down.

I must be totally off base or the difference between 75 and 160 per hour is insignificant

I do a good amount of the work myself, but when I cant, or feel better having a pro look at it, I have no problems paying $100.00 + per hr labor. Its the markup on the parts that hurts a bit , but hey, they gotta make some $$$ too. I just dropped the MH off last night for a genny repair. I dont want to squash my face lowering a 180 lb beast to work on it. The shop has a nice clean shop with a lift and someone that has done it before.

Full timing it since July 2012 My pics

We have a fellow in Florida that has done some work for us and his
rate is $65. Does good work, too. Doesn't waste time and lives
close to the RV park where we stay.

$90 an hour here.
My first thought when someone asks about starting in RVing is always "Are you machanically inclined, physically able and have the tools, time etc?" If they reply "no" and still want to do it, they are either rich or dumb....bless their hearts...
