I am being told that my Sunchaser 5th does not recharge its batteries while being pulled down the road and that the only way to recharge them is by plugging in. This, of course, necessitates purchasing a generator.

This cannot be true.

One way to tell...take a voltage measurrment of the TT battery withou the TV attached...and again with the TV attached/ engine running. If the voltage goes up...it is getting something from the TV alternator.

I find that highly unlikely. Another way to ensure that your TV is connected to your 5vr battery is to disconnect the positive of your 5vr battery. Connect the trailer umbilical to the TV. Measure for nominal 12 volts from the battery cable that you disconnected to ground. If 12 Volts appears on the meter then you're connected to the charging circuit on your TV. If not, then you may have to install the charging circuit. Reconnect the positive cable to your battery.
It's important that you have 12 Volts at all times while you are towing to keep some of your services operating, like your fridge. You may not get much charge to your battery if you are connected to the TV charging circuit, but then you won't drain your battery either, because you are getting 12 V power from your TV.

This cannot be true.

Perhaps you misunderstood the meaning of the words "plugged in". On its OWN, the rig can't recharge its own batteries- but any 12v battery-equipped trailer can be recharged during travel by way of being plugged in to the tow vehicle.

It sounds to me like the fault may lie with the hookup to the tow vehicle.

It's a simple matter for your vehicle to charge the trailer battery, but it does require an active connection to the vehicle's charging system.

Welcome!
Normally the 5er or TT is charged going dowen the road through the trailer connector.
Your TV should have a fuse connected through a relay or a fuse with no relay. It depends on what your TV is and whether it was wired up properly.
What is make and model of TV? GM requires the installation of a 30 amp fuse in fuse block under the hood. Some Fords do not have the control fuse installed that operates the relay. Normally under the hood.
How are you connecting to the 5er? Factory receptacle has all wires connected. Custom installs may not have included charge wire.
Yes, it should charge is fully wired correctly.

Your truck may not be providing 12v power also. Check to make sure that the fuse is not blown and in place in the truck for providing charge power to the trailer. I've had one truck so far that could provide power but from the factory the fuse was not installed.

There is a big shop here in El Paso, I don't remember the name but they appear to be the "go to" guys around here.
