I was traveling down I5 in California about half way between Redding and Sacramento about 3mo ago when a white crew cab F350 passed us in the fast lane doing about 75MPH. As it passed us I noticed the front passenger tire hopping badly. Within seconds the tire blew and the driver and his young family swerved into the center median and stopped just short of a rock enbankment. It was a close one and I am sure the driver had to change his shorts after coming to a stop.

Looking at your picture I see the sidewall torn off. I'd say the sidewall blew out because you didn't have enough pressure in the tire. I run 70# when not towing and 80# when I am. 65# is too low. Glad you are safe.

GLAD things turned out O K
Tires/rims can be replaced, lives can't.
I have always believed that its best to ruin a tire wheel and get safely off the road before making repairs, far too many times people survive the blowout but get mangled changing the tire.
SCARY thought hauling the rig to a halt with limited steering, I have only lost one front tire in My life, empty truck and not towing, but still a handfull.

Thanks for all the well wishes
The TV is an '06 F-350 and has the OEM 20" aluminum rims and I've been replacing the tires with the OEM E rated Goodyear ATs that came on the truck from the factory when new. The door sticker says 75# rear and 65# front so that's what I run. I'm trusting Ford did their homework.
I had a rim crack in an odd place 2 years ago. I found it when washing the truck, threw on the spare, and quickly replaced the rim. The tire never lost presure.
Picture below shows the recent cracked wheel. Maybe this crack made its way past the bead and was slowly leaking air. When it lost enough presure, the tire heated up and blew? But I didn't notice it pulling or riding strange before the blowout.

My last flat was from a puncture and I was empty ('05 Duramax) according to my tire guy I had been running low/flat for quite some time but I did not notice anything until it went completely and I thought I had a blowout.

The pressures on your door sticker are interesting, My 2011 F350 calls for 75 psi on the front and 65 psi on the rear.

X2
I always used 80PSI on E rated tires. Never had a blowout.
Also, how old were the tires?

Tires are < 1 year old. Maybe 20-25k on them. I checked the tire temps with an infrared thermometer when we stopped an hour earlier. All 4 tires on the truck were within a few degrees. Guess it can't hurt to start running 75psi up front while towing.
I don't trust the wheels. 2 cracked in 2 years? Coincidence?

UPDATE...
NOW make it THREE original OEM 20" Ford Aluminum wheels that have cracked! 2 fronts and 1 rear. I do not offroad, hit curbs, or recall hitting any serious potholes at anytime. Tires have always been replaced with the OEM Goodyear AT/S's since new
Yesterday driving 65mph on the highway empty, another flat/failure caused by a cracked wheel. Tires had 75 psi. This crack is exactly like the first a few years ago. Replaced the first two with used OEM wheels found on Ebay + the new tire costing about $700 each incident.
The 2 replacments have not cracked. All three that have failed were original wheels that came on the truck when new.
To me this is a SAFETY issue. I called FoMoCo explaining the 3 cracked wheels and was told there is no recall or warranty, so there is nothing they will do. I feel these 20" Aluminum wheels are defective and I have found many of these 20" wheels that have cracked searching the net. A guy had 2 listed on CL locally and said the other 2 had cracked the same as the one pictured below. My mechanic has seen one also.
There are 5-6 complaints on the NHTSA website regarding these 20" wheels cracking for no apparent reason. Some state Ford was contacted and did nothing. http://www.nhtsa.gov/Vehicle+Safety/Recalls+&+Defects
I guess it's not enough for a recall or Ford to even give a damn. Someone might have to die first?
I'm done with these OEM wheels and not a big Ford fan at the moment.
Thinking of replacing with these 19.5's wheels rated at 4500#. http://www.visionwheel.com/wheel.cfm?id=522

Here's the first cracked wheel a few years ago...
I scrapped that wheel but still have the last 2 cracked wheels. Ford can have them if they want.
