Not a newbie exactly but here's one I haven't really figured out in the real world. How do you really lift these things to change a flat if you can't jack the axle up? Does the "Trailer Aid" lifting device work? I know for sure I can lift it with two jack stands and some four x fours but don't really want to carry all of that. Mines a pretty light unit so that's a bonus...\

I've never had a problem jacking on the axle right under the U bolt.

IMO the "Don't jack under the axle" warning is to keep people from sticking that jack under the center or some unsupported area of the axle and bending it. Mainly a CYA by the manufacturer.

I also jack right under the U-bolt. No problems so far.

Been jacking trailers under the "U"Bolt for over 50 years and never a problem. But don't do it anywhere else.

X4 I have had to change a tire on the road twice and used a bottle jack under the u-bolt without any problem. If I would have had to jack up on the frame as the manufacturers state I'd have had to call for road service as it takes too much lumber to get the jack close to my frame aand I don't carry a Trailer Aid-that's what a jack is for.

Not sure if this is "OK" but worked for me. Ran good tire up on some more 2X4's (acutally more than I thought I would need) and pulled off flat, and had to put more 2X4's under good tire to raise in order to get spare on. After that I know now where my jack is. Won't do it again that way.

I jack from the axle tubes next to the U bolt or the U bolt itself on std leaf spring axles. I've jacked axles up to 10k using this method.

Which ever method you choose make a dry run at home. Some folks found out the hard way those trailer aids or ramps didn't raise the other axle with the flat tire.

I had to change a tire recently at the campground and finally was able to use my Trailer-Aid. Lucky my friend had a bottle jack as the Trailer aid would not lift the tire off the ground. So I just gave it away to my Brother-in-law.
