I just purchased a (new to me) 2004 Suburban 2500 with the 8.1 liter big block, 4wd, and 4.10 gears. The transmission is a 4 spd tranny. Which one did GM put in these trucks.

I have the '05 2500HD truck, and the owners manual says it is an Allison.

The 8.1L in the pickups came with the Allison. The Burbs got the 4L80E.

If you still have the RPO code sticker (a sticker with lots of 3 character codes on it) in the glove box, you can look here to decode them:
http://lonestarthunder.com/m_rpo.php
This will tell you what drivetrain options, axle ratios, seat styles, radio type, pretty much everything.

We have that one in our MH and they are good transmissions. I would recommend a bucket flush using 14 quarts of Dexron VI from WM or better. On some Escalade forum there is a good right up with pictures. Two summers ago we did both the Blazer and Escalade one Sunday afternoon. Pans were dropped the time before.

Thanks ya'll, dont know much about the 4L80E, but everything else on this burb was exactly what we wanted and looking at it and driving it ya can't tell it's not a new vehicle. I am really looking forward to towing with it.

Yep.
Congratulations! I looked for about a year to find a 03-06 8.1L/4.10 low mileage Burb in good condition. Only found a handful across the country I would have purchased, but ended up getting a new one. It's a great TV! Not many problems to worry about. Replace the receiver it is is the OEM one.
I think the 4L85E came in 2003+, a bit stronger than the 4L80E.
