We use ours for gold prospecting but never struck it rich.... ....Have found lots of cavalry uniform buttons and such out west. Many place don't allow the use of them on their property, so make sure you ask before going onto either public or private property. BLM has never said no, but the USFS head ranger in our area has banned them.....

When we were traveling I would hit as many small parks as I could in the towns we were in. I would average over $150 per year in spendable change I found, besides the rings and jewelry. I scrapped 4 of the rings last year and got $340 for the gold at a shop. It is supposed to be fun and the findings are the bonus. If your around water, hit the beaches where folks spread the blanket out and lay. Find the soccer fields and hit the areas where the parents and family sit to watch. Old churches are also good for old stuff. If in doubt, always ask permission and fill in every hole you did, make it look like you never never there. I have 2 White's machines and have had excellent luck with them. Have fun and best of luck.

A USFS Head ranger banned them? I spent many years in law enforcement and I've never known of a law enforcement official that was able to ban something like this. The Rangers enforce the law they don't make them. Seems to me like that regulation would have to come down from an Adminitrative body, if it exists.

I bought a really expensive metal detector last years but have only played with it a few times. I had one year ago that was not real expensive so I spent a lot of time digging up trash. My new one has all the controls to discrimate against trash, but after taking it out a few times I think I ripped myself off. I found that if the detector found something metal, even if the gauge said it was trash, I still dug it up anyway. Just because it says trash doesn't mean it really is, but most of the stuff I dug up was trash.

The Rangers enforce the law they don't make them. Seems to me like that regulation would have to come down from an Administrative body, if it exists. In the USFS hierarchy, the "head ranger" is the person in charge of either a forest district or all the districts in that region forest. It has nothing to do with law enforcement and believe me, the head ranger has powers over their turf that no one should have. The ranger in our area that put the ban in place, was so paranoid about civilians hating her, she turned her district office complex and the area around the entrance to her office in to a virtual fortress. It went from an open normal USFS office in 2006, to a locked down building with security cameras and alarms on every window, doorway and hallway in 2007. The head ranger makes the rules in their district and tell the Federal LEO which they want special enforcement of and which they don't want to see any enforcement of....Spent 2 years working in that district and saw it all, just as I stated....

I'll take your word for it, but I've simply never heard of such a thing in government, and I have a masters degree in Public Administration. Making a regulation or a law in government is never supposed to be up to one person. That's exactly where the term "it takes an act of Congress" comes from.

I have an older model Garrett Groundhog A.D.S. I have never truly learned to use it. It takes a lot of practice to learn the variations in tone. I was recently told that there may now be a perfect metal detector in the Minelab CTX 3030. I would like to have one, but at 2500 smackaroo's, I think I'll have to pass. I have read the Garrett like mine will do things that most new detectors will do and what some will not, it just has a large learning curve. I also thinks it works at the frequency to find gold......like there's a lot of that in Texas. LOL

We got a frantic call from GS's fiance on a 4th of July night because her ring was missing. We said we'd bring the metal detector in the morning. It took us about 10 minutes and the lost was found ! Happy girl.
