I know everyone has an opinion so let's hear it with your reasoning...
Black tank is treated with chemicals and a little water. Camp all weekend and tank is less than half full. Will be returning the following weekend. Do I dump my black tank and re-prep for next trip or leave "dirty" knowing that we won't overfill it even on the following weeekend's trip?
The dilemma is will this cause an odor versus the extra work to dump and waste of chemicals for dumping a half full black tank.
You all are a wealth of knowledge and experience so I appreciate everyone's opinion.

I dump my black tank whenever I can...two weeks ago I put some water and bleach in it, used my swivel stick on it at home, then dumped on the way into the campground. During the camping trip...I poured a little of the soapy water in it also, and dumped on the way out last Tuesday morning. Just something I do...I put some clean water in it and then treat it.

I would dump. Unless you're saving it for some reason. It always considered it a holding tank not a storage tank.

Never use chemicals. Never have any odors from the black tank either.
And when travelling often do not dump for up to a week, because we are usually camped in the bush. So can't see the harm in letting it set for a week.

If it were me and I was sure I wasn't going to fill it during the next weekend, I would just let it go and dump after next weekend. I don't think you'll have any odor issues. I've left mine partially full for several weeks at pretty high temps and not had any issues. IMO, of course...

As we pack up and just as we leave, I dump the Ice cubes from the fridge down the toilet and drive home. We have a dump site right in town a couple of blocks from the house, so stop, dump, flush and the leave a few gallons in the tank. Don't use chemicals but flush with bleach a couple of times a season.

If moving and not using the trailer for a few days or more I add water and dump.

Chemicals or no, the break down of the effluent in the tank starts immediately. Along with that breakdown, you get odor along with methane gas. Granted the amount of gas generated is small, but it is still being made. If you have TP in the tank and it happens to get around your tank sensors, then you have a problem there too. It only makes sense to use your holding tanks as just that and not storage tanks. In addition, if water weighs 8 pounds to the gallon, what would you calculate the weight of sewage to be per gallon? Moving that weight has cost associated with it. Better to dump the stuff!

We dump before leaving any campground, then add 1 gallon of water to each tank so they do not dry out. This has caused no problems in over 100,000 miles, and we often stop at CG for only a night or two.

What if it is just urinate? We dumped when we left the camp ground but used the bathroom for #1 on our 8 hr trip home. I wasn't sure if I should dump considering it's only pee and we'd be camping two weeks later. Now i'm thinking I should go get the trailer and take it somewhere to dump.
thoughts?
