Google has a cute short animation on their opening page about it...we went from having a total of 4000 across the USA in 1958 to the current total of around 330.

I'm sure we all have memories of warm summer nights with the entire famiy packed into the DeSoto watching Moses, or maybe Apes running the World on the big screen, while we were munching on popcorn, Hot Dogs, JuJuBe's and sipping lemonade.

Me and my 3 brothers would bring folding chairs and sit in front of the car.

And did you ever get "lost" trying to find the car after going to the bathroom!

It was all about families having a night out together. And if the film stopped, jammed or broke, the honking and flashing headlights started! And the intermissions half way thru the movie while they showed all the yummy stuff the snack bar was selling!

I'll bet you folks have stories to tell with a bit of nostalgia and perhaps a "sigh" of what else will our grandkids never experience!

My posts shouldn't be taken for factual data. They are purely fictional, for entertainment purposes and should not be constituted as actually related to scientific, technical, engineering, legal, spiritual or practical advice. Amen.

We still have one here and we visit it a number of times each summer. The last time was opening weekend for The Avengers.

Cherry Bowl Drive-in just south of Traverse City, MI is still in operation since 1953.

Always a double feature, cartoon, and intermission. Playground for the kids, mini-golf, and one price per car/van/truck.

Their statment is:

"Our Goal: To Provide a Memorable Environment that Takes You Back to the Fabulous ‘50’s with the Finest in Film, Food, Fun and Family Entertainment. We will never play any movie stronger than PG-13 or any movie that glorifies teen drinking or drug use."

The type you CAN take a family to.

Here in Oregon, there is a drive-in theater that is open Fri-Sun during the warmer months and even shows current movies. Hearing the movie in FM Stereo is way better than the speaker that hung on the car door.

My family went to movies at the drive theater when I was a kid. The closest one to my parents' house the finally closed in the late 80s. All I remember is that we wore our pajamas and Mom made pizza rolls when we got home.

I remember them well. Used to love going to them. Once there were 5 ('60's)....now there are none in my city.

And backing your behind against the in-car heater?
Ah yes, the berth place of many people.

I always wondered where the meat came from for the hamburgers and what was it really.

We're fortunate to have two drive-in theaters in our area, with one just a few miles from our base cottage. We usually manage to get to at least 5 or 6 shows each season.
