Both the 2012 Dodge 2500HD (17inch) and the 2012 GMC 2500HD (18inch) come with the option to go 20 inch wheels (LT265/60/R20E on a GMC - ebay) Both are 3.73 rear ends. 5er will be a 11500# GVWR.
Pros and Cons
probably use 5th gear towing as the added diameter reduces torque . braking should be the same - exhaust brakes -
added deck height for 6" clearance of 5er? adjust the hitch down 1".
Read that the larger wheel rims and tyres increase the vehicles GVWR rating .
Okay the speedo and mile counter will be out but a GPS will give you a speed too.
I hope to be a "tour"ist not a "Camp"er so hope the lower revs while cruising around empty (not towing ) could save me fuel .Not expecting to gain much when towing but while touring I hope the gain offsets the option cost over the life of the tyre.
Anyone out there with this configuration .I´m talking 11500# not a pop up trailer..
Your valuable replies are always welcomed.

A 20 inch rim is not necessarily bigger in diameter.

I have a 2011 Silverado 2500 HD 4x4 and 20" wheels are an option. It clearly states in the owners manual that if you have the 20" wheels you can not go off road. It seems crazy to offer a option on a 4x4 truck that would not let it go off road.

Check the 20" rim tire diameter - it may be the same as 18" tire diameter. Load rating depends on the tire load range, not diameter. May or may not have higher rating.

Say it isn't true!
The Lt265/60R20 I found had a 32.4 diameter, or only one inch larger than a Lt265/75R16. Should only slightly effect gearing. They will look pretty but very costly. Not that practical on a truck expected to do real work.

I had 20 inch E rated tires on my F250. Each tire was rated at 3750 lbs each at 80 psi. The truck towed great, I had the 3:73 rear and used tow haul. I did tow through the Penn. mountains I 80 from ohio to NY. My rig gvw 15500, ready to camp with empty tanks was 13,778. The truck had plenty of power but often downshifted going up through the mountains. I calculated mileage 10 mpg while towing 18 on the road not towing. The tires increased the rawr by 1400 pounds theoretically. The tires are the weak link on the rear, I was over the door sticker for the axle weight but under on the tire weight ratings. I have since upgraded to a F350 dually so now I am under on all the weights. I really liked the 20 inch tires. Don't know if they are worth the price tag though.

I had 20's on our '08 F350. When checking things before our trip to Alaska found that the spare was only a 18" on a very flimsy wheel. Ford said that was how they did it and suggested if it needed to be used while towing it should only go on the front. I don't know how GM & Dodge outfit their rigs.
