We used to use Citronella candles on our unscreened porch and that worked fairly well. But, I haven't seen any of the old, cheap metal bucket candles anywhere, and I'm just wondering what everyone else does for evenings outside the RV.

Do you just slap on bug spray/lotion, use candles, bug lights, or what? Many campsites don't allow campfires except at their designated fire rings, which may or may not be close to where we park. Not sure if they allow the campfire in a bucket things. Husband has a propane lantern that I don't want him using since that attracts.

If we don't put the Patty'o room up then we use the EZ-up w/screen panels. (Easier but much smaller)
Either way I usually get out the ol extension cord and BUG LIGHT When out by the fire, we have and use the mesquito coils in two terra cota holders. I think they smell better than the citranella candels. Also love the new DRY Back woods OFF, no greasy feel !

The best? DEET

Everything else is way back in second place. Sometimes seconds place is just fine......but then again you asked for the best.

Place a light outside the screen rooms for the bugs to swarm to and leave the darker screen room alone.

I have a small fan turned on blowing at floor level. Mosquitos cannot fly well so cannot aviate in the area. The fan also blows the CO2 away from your body which they say attracts mosquito.

See you on the road!

It seems the only thing that works is DEET and everything else is a waste of time and money.

We have mosquitoes so big here they have N numbers and have to contact air traffic control for collision avoidance. I have tried every mosquito avoidance contraption/concoction known to human kind, from coils, citronella lamps, Thermacell lanterns, Off Clip Ons, burning ropes, punk sticks, bug lights, Tiki Torches, yard foggers, and fans.

I am happy to report that nothing, absolutely nothing works but repellent containing Deet and plenty of it applied often. Anyone that tells you Skin So Soft works should try it on one arm and Deet on the other, then compare welts.

I agree about the Skin So Soft. So, Deet it is then, though I hate applying anything like that to my skin. We do have a floor level fan, but honestly it's not strong enough to even feel unless there is zero wind.

Skin So Soft got it's reputation back in the 1970's when it was found to be a fairly good black fly repellant. Folks just figured if it worked at all on black flies it would work on anything that flies.
Avon got wind of it and in their infinite wisdom started telling their sales people about it's repellant qualities without mentioning only black flies. To make matters worse they changed the formula and it has lost just about all it's repellant qualities.

As a side note we have friends that bought one of those expensive propane powered and liquid mosquito repellers.
But those are not repellers they are attractors. As CO2 is one thing mosquitoes zero in on. They are meant to be placed as far as where you're going to be as possible to attract the bugs away from you.
The folks still can't understand why the expensive machine they setup right next to the picnic table doesn't work; no matter how many times me and others try to explain it to them.

As for us we'd buy Yard Guard by the case, but it gets used a little less now with the thermocell repellers.

I've seen the metal bucket citronella candles at our local Dollar General & Family Dollar stores...maybe even at Wal Mart, but not sure about it.
