We now have a 31 foot Class C and are looking for a 4 wheeler drive crossover or something to tow to Colorado to drive around off road with. What are you suggestions.
We tow a Hummer H3. It's a nice highway car and a very capable off road vehicle. Towing is very simple. All you do is press and hold a button for 10 seconds. You don't leave a key in the ignition. I use a Roadmaster 9000 braking system and a Blue Ox tow bar. The "baseplate" is simple. You just replace the two front tow hooks with receivers.
Holiday Rambler Navigator DP, Hummer, and Honda VT1100C Shadow
But, if a more "civilized" vehicle is desired, either the Jeep Liberty or the Grand Cherokee. Just make sure it has the transfer case with "NEUTRAL" selectable.
Personally, while the 2012 Wrangler is nice, and the V6 engine is peppy, (my son has one), I like my '06 better.

I guess everyone missed that he would be towing with a 31' class C, so heavy toads are out.....
My suggestion is a Suzuki or Tracker, in the 04-06 year range. These are fairly comfortable vehicles, are true 4x4 and IMO are little mountain goats. The also tip the scales way under the others suggested, can be found for a reasonable price and tow set ups are easy to find and install. We towed a 1999 Suzuki Vitara till it was rear ended while attached to the RV and then towed a 2003 Suzuki XL-7 for a couple of years. Both were excellent toads.

A stock wrangler TJ has a curb weight of 3,092-3,832 lbs depending on options. A first-gen Jeep Liberty is 4,033 lbs, and the 2nd gen is slightly lighter at 3,985 lbs. The first gen Grand Cherokees were 3500-3900 lbs, and the current model is 4,261 lbs.
Many class C's have 5k towing capacity. I don't see the problem...

Most 31' C's have a frame extension welded on and that limits the tow weight, usually to 3500#. Also, most 31' models are close to maxed out on CCC and that also limits the GVCWR. When you talk class C, there are many things to look at, not just hook up and tow.
I towed my '06 Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited with the Tioga 29H that we had, E350 based, 460 V8.
No trouble; nothing bent; nothing broke; no accidents, incidents or occurrences; nobody died or was injured!
We even went over Marias Pass on Highway 2, then drove up the hill to Hungry Horse Dam, across the Dam and went to Lost Johnny Point Campground.
And back.
Several times.
By the way, the Jeep is NOT stock. With the added iron, and the 30 gallon gas tank, it is somewhat heavier than a stock vehicle.
Do I recommend that other do what I have done? Absolutely NOT!
I am merely pointing out that it CAN be done, it HAS been done, and it WILL beo done again, probably many times.
Each of us has to make up our own minds about what we can and/or should do.
Good luck.
