Hello everybody. We are looking at upgrading our TV to a used Excursion. There are two in my area both with similar mileage, however, one is the 2005 V10 (47,000 miles) and the other is the 2005 6.0 diesel (45, 402 miles).
I am wondering if anyone who is, or who has towed with an Excursion can speak to the pros and cons of choosing the V10 over the diesel or vice versa.
Do they both have similar power?
What is the mpg comparison?
What kind of longevity can I expect between the two?
Any opinions, tips and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Raegan

I drive an 09 f250 v-10. Love it. I also hears to stay away from the 6.0 unless you don't mind the possibility of breaking down far from home.

Hello, I have an 02 V-10 Excursion. I tow a 35 foot total length trailer that weighs in ready to travel at 9100 lbs. GCW is 17,000lbs. it is rated for 20,000lbs with the 4.30`s, 17,000lbs w/3.73`s. mine has plenty of power, and tows great....now! the issue is with how they feel when they are towing. I had a problem with mine swaying when towing. the Excursion needs to have a rear sway bar (on the axle) for it to tow well. the other thing it needs is some type of spring enhancement. I put airbags on mine, the kind that attaches to the spring and not the axle! this will properly load the spring. there is also the option of installing F250/350 rear springs there is another add-on, but I forget it`s name at the mioment. for towing heavy try and find one with 4.30 gears (hard to find from the factory) or swap them out after you by it. as far as the 05 with the 6.0 good luck with that. some people never have an issue with them and others are always having problems, it`s a gamble with the 6.0. my towing mileage is around 7.5 for what I tow. a 6.0 will be higher, but so is the purchase price. I swapped from 3.73`s to 4.30`s and it was a night and day difference. there will be a few others here to offer their opinion. Crappie Fisherman is a forum member and he will give you a more indepth explanation of the Excursion capabilities and enhancements!
Good luck!

I have owned both a 7.3 PSD and a V-10 Excursion. The V-10 is a very capable tow vehicle. However the 6.0 will have more torque and a torque shift transmission. The 6.0 if/when running properly will be a superior tow vehicle vs. a V-10.
A diesel engine will always out perform a gas engine when towing large loads.
Nonetheless a V-10 Excursion will have no problem towing a heavy TT it just will not out perform as well as a diesel
The big issue is that the 6.0 PSD engine has had countless problems. Ford and Navistar sued and counter sued each other for the millions in warranty claims pertaining to the 6.0 engine.
While manning aftermarket fixes have now been developed to bullet proof the 6.0 I would steer clear of the 6.0 at this point and focus on the V-10. If you really desire a diesel look for a 7.3 PSD.
Either way you cannot go wrong with an Excursion if you need to carry a lot of passengers and tow a large trailer.
The Excursion is the still the best SUV for towing even though it has been out of production for a few years now.

Save yourself some money and headaches and purchase the V-10. The 05 V-10 will be the 3v version and it is a dream motor. If you do not act quickly it will be gone, they are highly sought after by those in the know.

V10 has excellent reliability and is very strong. It doesn't have the same power as the diesel but it is still a solid tow vehicle.
The 6.0 is often referred to as the 6.doh. I think it's kind of funny.
If the 6.0 has never been modded or "tuned" you stand a much greater chance of having very little issue. Not every 6.0 falls apart but a lot of them have had some major issues. For me. I will take the reliability of a v10 over a 6.0 for now. it's a crapshoot. Lot have great success with their 6.0 diesel
Thanks and good luck.

I have a V10 excursion with 3.73 rear end and a trailer about 8500 or 9000 lb. I tightened up the steering box and have added nothing. It tows fine just like they made it.

My co worker has an 2003 Excursion with a diesel.
He loves it. He is 6 foot 6 and close to 290 pounds.
He is 43 and has teenage kids which he is active with.
His is high mileage because he drives a lot .
He spent an extra 4 days on last year's vacation being stranded on the way home by this Excursion, towing his Centurion wakeboard boat from Lake Shasta.
He has had other minor difficulties with this rig . Each time the vehicle quit.
He drives all over the staqte to see his kids participate in sports.
For him there is still no better choice because they need the room for very tall kids.
