I have a reel of 16mm film. The reel measures approx 3 inches in diameter and is very close to full of film. I'd like to get an idea of how many feet of film are on the reel so I will have a good idea of how severe a beating my wife will give me for paying to get the film converted to a DVD.

It's how many feet of EXPOSED film you have in that reel that counts. I found an old reel of film that I took in the 60's aboard ship and paid quite a steep price to find out that 1). I'm wasn't much of a photographer and 2) that what I thought was interesting in 1963 in Norfolk, Va. wasn't the least bit interesting in 2009. I suspect the price of conversion may have come down quite a bit but if I were you I would try to preview the film before I spent the money to convert it to a DVD.

I'm sure that no professionals were involved in the production of the film. It was taken in 1950 at Christmas and is of my family. The whole reel is exposed. It will only be of sentimental value, of course, but I am looking forward to seeing it.

Pull it all off the reel, take both ends and bring together and the length will twice that. Hope I helped.

I'm guessing you don't have a 16mm projector? I have a bunch of 35mm slides that I was going to have digitized. Places wanted between $1 and $1.75 per slide to do this. So I could pay $500 or more to have it done or I could pay $75 for an attachment for my Cannon SLR camera and do it myself. I paid for the attachment and did them all myself.

Now if you only have one reel you probably don't want to buy a projector to do just it, but may you could rent one or borrow one? If you pay to have somebody do it, all they are going to do is play the movie on some type of screen and then videotape it with a video camera on a mount. It's something you can do yourself. But then again if it's only the one reel is may be cheaper and easier in the long run to pay to have it done.

This exactly what my friend did with our Wedding film. He even bought the projector at the local Sally Ann! He even dubbed some sound on to it, which looks kinda weird as we had a German wedding with an Oom-papa(?) band, so it looks like we are doing polkas to early 70s Disco!

Looks like this place would do it for about $25 when all is said and done.

Their prices don't look bad at all. Looks like prices for these services are coming down with more competetion being added.
