Will depend on the SD laws. SD may accept an out-of-state CCW permit as proof of training, maybe not.

Go to: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006U6R1QE/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0972548904&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1FN024AKT7A3BQ6MC79X
and buy the book. Most important is that, in the United States, if you keep it in your RV don't flash it around or talk about having it you should be just fine. Remember the Fourth Amendment doesn't allow unreasonable searches; so, if you don't agree to have your RV searched and haven't broken the law, you'll be fine. I'm not a lawyer; but, this works for me.

Good advice. The logical flaw is that those who deny your 2nd ammendment rights should not be expected to honor your 4th ammendment rights. But then, when does logic apply to politically motivated decisions?

What I did was get as many non resident gun permits that I could get through the mail that covered me in the majority of states that I travel in. I have 6 permits. I have my resident permit in Alabama, I have non resident permits in Connecticut, Florida, Maine, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania. Many of these states have reciprocity that over lap on my permits but usually there's one or two states that I pick up by having those extra permits. States like Connecticut and Maine only recognize their own non resident permits so you pretty much have to get their permits if you travel there. Florida has the most states with reciprocity. I think it's up to about 34 now if I'm not mistaken maybe a couple more by now since I've not checked in about 6 months.
I also read that Pennsylvania has now stopped issuing non resident permits without a person showing up in person to have their picture and finger prints taken. When I received mine I did it completely by mail as I did all my other permits except for my resident permit in Alabama. The next time my Pennsylvania permit needs to be renewed I'm going to let it expire since it now serves me no purpose since Florida has added the states that I originally got the Pennsylvania permit to cover.

I'm no expert, but I know there are some states that do NOT honor reciprocity with non-resident permits. You may have already verified the states that are covered by your Alabama resident permit.

Just sayin non-resident reciprocity isn't always there.

Yep and that's the reason I don't visit those states. Never trust a government that fears it's own law abiding citizens!

+1. Mostly northeastern "blue" states but there is also Illinoizzz and Kalifornia.

I'm not sure if I'll ever travel in Canada again either. Too bad, I really liked New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, BC and the Yukon.

There is some good advice and some not so good advice given here. If you really want the best information, join the NRA and take a concealed carry course in your state. California, Illinois, and D.C. may be the most gun unfriendly. The NRA has lots of information and is constantly fighting to protect you rights to defend yourself. Without the NRA, you would not be able to own a handgun now.
Look into, you will be glad you did.
Best wishes.

Just out of curiosity, what do you guys do if planning on traveling to/through Canada? Are there places to "store" your handguns on the US side? If the general plan is "don't ask don't tell", well, I'm certainly not judging, but maybe the less I know, the better.....

Just wondering what the legally accepted method would be.

Huston, do NOT take a handgun to Canada unless you want to spend a lot of time there. It is possible to register a handgun with their authorties and bring it into the country. Once again, the NRA would be able to help you with that.
Once you reach the point where you have to announce if you have any guns, there is no turning back and they will arrest you if it is not properly registered with them.
By the way, "don't ask, don't tell" is like playing russian roulette. It is a foolish game, and I know of some people who have played and lost.
