We are looking to purchase a used Motorhome. It is a 2005 Itasca with a 4 door norcold refrigerator. In the freezer compartment towards the front the plastic is warped and melted. We asked the salesman about this and he told us the refrigerator was fine and it did work. This was caused by the recall problem that Norcold had with its ref. and that the recall has been fixed. Our concern with this is: Could this refrigerator have caught on fire. It seems that it would take quite a bit of heat to melt and warp the plastic in the freezer. Is this safe to use. The fridge does work but we are concerned with any safety issues this may cause. We also don't want to end up purchasing a fridge that cost between $3400. and 4 grand after spending money on the Motorhome.
Depends on what you can purchase the unit for. The bottom line is either negotiate with the seller to replace the refrigerator or negotiate a price so that you can afford to replace it yourself. Just remember there are other units out there that can satisfy your needs as well. Saying NO sometimes is the right thing to do.

Interesting:
We just received a recall notice from Norcold, and we don't even have a Norcold. (ours is Dometic), but what might be of interest to you is what the letter said.
"In Oct, 2010 Norcold iniatiated a recall for models 1200, 1201, and 1211, gas/electric typically found in RV model years 1997 to 2011.
Even if your refrigerator was retrofitted as part of this recall it is necessary to have it retrofitted with the new HTS (high temp sensor) safety device to minimize the risk of injury or death due to fire"
It goes on to say if you have one of these models, set the refrig controls to off, Unplug the refrig, and contact your dealer as soon as possible.
The number to call if you have questions is 800 767-9101
There is a lot of other info on this notice too, but too much to quote here
If it was me , and it was one of the above models, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole, unless it had this new recasll work completed.
That wasn't cause by a recall problem, it was either (as said) someone defrosting with a hair dryer or, if it's the ice maker side, a malfunctioning ice maker.
I use a 1500W hair dryer to defrost the freezer several times a year, never had a problem with the plastic warping.
I don't see how the recall would cause the unit to warp. If it did, then the refrig caught fire; you would see signs of fire by removing the exterior access panel.
Woops, went outside, Chris beat my response.
