What type of Benedryl do you give a dog, just the over-the-counter people stuff? How much for a 50 lb dog to alleviate allergic reaction itching?

I wouldn't give a dog Benadryl without consulting a vet. I know that they don't metabolize human meds the same way we do (for example, baby aspirin is a 24 hour dose, and ibuprofen is outright poison).

my vet told us to give a regular 25mg capsule to our 10 lb Bichon, right out of the pack. We bought some generic walmart version and we keep it in the camper for the family, and now the dog too. i thought that was weird but we followed her advice and she felt better. I expected she would be knocked out but she was still awake, just chilling out. And Bichons are famous for skin allergies

1 mg/# body wt. But if this is a true allergic reaction (like bee sting, hives, etc.) oral may not be enough and you might need to get to a vet.

My vet says 1 to 2 mg. per pound of body weight every 8 to 12 hours. The higher amount for something like a bee sting, but start with the lower amount and work up if needed for seasonal allergies.
Make sure you get plain Benadryl (generic diphenhydramine) and not anything with a decongestant in it.

we give our 30 lb lhasa two 25mg store brand tablets twice a day.
we also found that he might be getting sand mites from an old sandbox filled with plain sand instead of playbox sand..evidently, the two kinds of sand are different texture..
anyway, we replaced the old sand with new and that seems to have helped, too.

I was told 1 mg. per pound of body weight for a normal dose. I was wondering if a benadryl tablet can be split for a small dog? Maddie only weighs around 12.5 pounds.

Tink is 9.6 pounds and gets either half of a 25 mg tablet, or a whole one depending on the severity of the symptoms. Or at least she used to, rarely takes it now.
The generic tablets I get at wallyworld are scored in the middle for easy halfing.

You can also get Benedryl (or generic) LIQUID for children. It is 12.5mg per 5mL. So each mL (or cc) = 2.5mg of Benedryl. Makes dosing A LOT easier for small dogs. So instead of busting open a pill, or giving a higher than needed dose, you can get pretty close to the 1 lb = 1 mg dosage. Use a pediatric dropper, syringe, or dump it on their food. It is quite sweet tasting, so most dogs like it.
