Hello I am posting over here, duplicate of my post
on technical problems forum, hopping so maybe someone who
lives/stays longer in Mexico can help
Hello All;
In my another post, recently, I was asking for help with setting solar system , thanks all who answered/helped ,
I am still in process of up grating , and expenses are going really high .
Weather changed, where I am , and I am in Mexico Oaxaca .
It is very cloudy every day and is raining .
One of technicians working on my solar system tried to measure
output from my converter when connected to "regular electricity",
and nothing, zero .
Technician said he does not know anything about it .
Solar controller is showing low charge, I am desperate, know almost nothing about all these things .
Who I suppose to hire, electrician ? car electrician ?
Can controller to be fixed ?
Should I replace controller with charger ?
I am having very expensive for me gel deep cycle batteries.
What kind of stores can have converter or charger which I need , if I need new ?
What eventually electrician suppose to check ?
My generator also is not connected , because was repaired, starter was
not working , should generator be connected to converter ?
again who can do it ?
Please help , and again I am in Oaxaca Mexico , where to turn ?
thanks
eva

If you can't find a converter, just go to auto parts store and get an ordinary battery charger.

The solar system does not go through your converter.
Your solar panels if wired correctly go through a solar charge controller and then to the battery.
The ii0v power goes to your converter and that converts 110v AC to 12v DC and charges your batteries. The two systems are independent.
So if your are plugged to 110v and get no 12v DC out, your converter could be bad. The suggestion to buy a battery charger is the best solution.
You should be getting about 17v out of the solar panels, this goes to a charge controller which puts out from 13.2v to 15v depending on the state of battery charge.

In Mexico your best bit to find someone to work on your converter is at a Marina. You will have to go to a port and find someone who works on ocean going boats. My best guess!

The output from your controller is probably low because it is cloudy and as a result it can not keep up.
The converter has nothing to do with the solar system. It sounds like it is dead. It simply converts 120 volts to 12 volts just like a battery charger. Go to Walmart or an automotive parts place and buy a good battery charger. Simply connect it to the battery and plug it in. It will get you through until you can get to an RV supplier or marina as Rocmoc said. Are you coming back north or are you staying south for an extended period. it is hard to find people who know about solar in Mexico, even CFE "electrical engineers" the electrical company in Quintana Roo don't have a clue. When I was trying to tell him we need 50 amp serice, so we need wire that can take 50 amps, he said we don't have amps in Mexico we only have volts....

That would be called a language barrier. Did you explain it in Spanish or have someone explain it for you. Don't confuse a language barrier for not having a clue. JMHO

We have several companies here in the north selling grid-tied solar connected to the CFE. The companies handle all the contracts, permits, and installation working with technicians from the CFE.
Battery Master also sells solar panels and all the needed items.

No it wasn't a language barrier, My Spanish isn't very good , but even a friend that is a Spanish electrical engineer tried to explain she just got a confused look from the CFE employee "engineer".
