Not trying to start anything here. Was wondering what years did Ford produce the diesel engines that caused owners so many problems. Also, what displacement and or/name did that engine have?

Thanks in advance.

All of them since 2003 are bad.

Ditto for every major brand.

Chances are, unless you personally knew the previous owner, it cannot be ruled out in the field without manufacturer proprietary tools and laboratory testing that a used unit:

- ran biodiesel (any % above 0)

- have been tuned, modded.

- properly maintained with manufacturer spec filters, fluids, etc.

The best way is to not own one unless you have to have one for your application.

The '06-'07 6.0 has some improvements that makes is less problem prone, but only compared to prior model years. It still has some inherent issues which can be $$$ to fix.

I think the 06 and 07 6.0's have a pretty good reputation. The 6.4 litre is also a good engine once the emission equipment is taken off and a good tuner is added. But if getting a trouble free used truck is of great value to you I recommend you buy an '06 GM or if you want older than that get an 04 - 05 Dodge.

Thanks for the answers. Just what I needed. Looking around for a truck to bounce a small trailer down Forest Service roads, go to the dump, lumber yard etc. Without starting new topic. Can someone tell me which Ford gasser had/has a problem with blowing out the spark plug?

That is an application for gasoline, not diesel.
