Before I really get started on my questions, I just want to clarify that I have no decision on which kind of tablet to get. It must be an ipad, but I can choose the model and connectivity type.
I will be reimbursed 75% for the cost of the device, but not get any assistance in a monthly data plan. This will be my personal device and will go with me should I leave this job. Wi-fi is available at work. Primary reason to get the ipad is work related. Currently do not have separate internet at home - just use our cell phone data plans (android). But we are moving and cell data at the other house really stinks, so we may be forced into getting some kind of internet. So far it looks like you still have to maintain a phone line to get DSL in that location (rural) which is honestly an expense we don't want until we recover from the move expenses.
I say this because I am having a hard time choosing which model to get. I don't think I want to add the cellular option because I am just not located in an area with good enough coverage and I rarely travel for work.
So, which size would you suggest getting? Basically, I would pay $135, $162, or $189. (16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB) So, a $60 spread. Budget-minded part of me that is trying to pay off debts and knows some major expenses are coming up says stick with the bottom two. Tech minded part of me says apps are larger with the new resolution, the 64 is a better value (price per GB), and it is better to go larger than needed, so therefore get the 64GB.
So, can someone with some actual real-world experience with the new ipad (ipad 3?) give me some guidance? Will a non-Apple user for everything else ever need the 64 GB or is 32 plenty?
I'm not even sure what kind of info you need from me. I don't foresee me adding much music to the device. I don't use an MP3 player, but I have almost my entire library on my phone in case I ever needed one. I think I've ended up using it once while we were fishing. However, I could see me using it as an e-reader. I'm working on getting rid of clutter, and books are a big part. I would just need wi-fi to download the book and then I could access it whenever, regardless of data availability, correct?
Work related app will be associated with wufoo. (Entries may be the name of the app to use with it.)
Thanks for any guidance. One of those wonderful work things where they try to butter you up by telling you that you are going to get a free ipad! And then you find out that it's not entirely free. And not only are you going to have to play tech support to the 15 new users, you are going to have to create all the forms as well. And the new users - many of them don't even know how to use a personal computer. **Bangs head on desk.**

DW has an Ipad2 She being tech unsavy likes it. Personally I do not like it. There are a lot of things you can get on the android market that are not available on the Apple side. I tan tether my android phone using a free app to my laptop, but not to the Ipad, or any Apple product for that matter. If you like your android phone get an android tablet. Learning curve will be seamless. Unless you need a lot of power hungry programs, a 16GB tablet it more than enough. But if you need this for some work intensive programs get the largest tablet possible.

I don't own an Ipad but I can tell you that no matter what device one gets the more storage memory the better - and for the difference of $60, go for the 64 gb. There is no way to expand an Ipad's memory - no SD card slot. You will be installing all apps, data, and anything that you might like to add for yourself such as music, video, photos, pdf files, documents, ebooks, etc. If you don't see yourself doing that then 32 gb is fine, but again - why limit yourself for what you might want to use this for down the road.
As to wifi at home - if you are moving to an area where cell and hotspot reception is poor, you may find yourself with cable internet. Set up a simple wifi network - very inexpensive to do with a wifi router - and you will have full access to the internet at home on your Ipad (and your phone if it has wifi access).
I have no choice in getting an android vs an ipad. This is part of a work related project where they were given monies to purchase ipads. Android tablets were not an option. I don't want this to get into an apple/android conversation, as there isn't anything I can do about it.
**But as an aside, I would choose an android tablet without question if that were an option.

Best wishes in your new job and your new home!
Thanks. That is basically what I am thinking. For the extra $60, why not go larger.
No cable internet available where we will be moving. Right now the choices are Hughes net (or other satellite internet if there are any) or going through the phone company, keeping the line, and getting DSL, or keeping the phone line and doing some kind of dial-up. My parents live at the house we are moving to, so I've been able to use all their info to search for a provider. Whatever route we go though, we could hook up a router and get wi-fi.
Thanks for the best wishes. My position in no way relates to technology, but since I seem to have a natural aptitude for it, I tend to end up playing tech support anytime we get a new program or piece of equipment, etc! Just one of those lovely things that gets categorized as "additional duties as assigned" and you say yes because you are thankful right now that you are one of the ones that does have a job!
Congratulations on GETTING that job. Jobs being scarce these days and all.
I do not have an iPad either, but I DO have an iPod Touch, which is the size of a phone, but uses the same OS and much of the same software as the iPad and iPhone.
I have 129 songs, 3 (very short, 5 min max) videos, 35 photos, and 20 apps on mine and have 3.8 Gb of a total of 8 Gb still available. But I let no cruft accumulate. YMMV.
I cannot judge your finances. That said, if someone were paying 25% of the cost for me, I would get as much as I could afford - and would try to get the 64GB iPad with cellular connection.
Note: The cellular iPad has GPS; the wifi only model does not. You do not have to activate an iPad that has the cellular chip. (The GPS will still work.) Having the cellular model would allow you to activate it later, if the need arises.
My wife is into her second month with her iPad 3rd Gen and loves it. We went big even though it was all out of our pocket 64GB with Cellular. The Verizon version (if you have coverage) has free hot spot capability and can be as cheap as $20/month for 1GB and you can turn it off from month to month when you don't think you needed it. If you end up needing it you can activate from iPad when ever you have Verizon signal. We took it on vacation and both the on the road connectivity and hot spot was used a lot. Was great for finding attractions, fuel and food on the go. I loaded a free map set (big) on it and I could ask my wife to check the map to see if a road was coming up or how far something was if we went of course, and she could pop it open and the built in GPS would put us on the map so she did not have to figure out where we were (this all works with out a network connection.)
With the higher bit density of the 3rd gen some apps will be bigger so that is another reason for larger memory.
My wife has a 32GB iPad 3 and I have the 64GB. I monitor both for usage and so far my wife is in no danger of exceeding her memory. It really comes down to how intensely you use your iPad especially for music, video, e-books and photos. Right now I have 33GB of storage available on my iPad after 6 months of use but on our next trip to Alaska I anticipate blowing beyond 32GB capacity with photo storage with two digital cameras besides the iPad. I'll also download and rent some movies to store on my iPad for the trip. Typically a standard rez movie suitable for displaying on our 22" RV LCD TV is about 1.5GB. There are few opportunities to live stream when on the road.
The bigger issue is iCloud. If you plan to utilize it you will get 5GB free storage. If you want to stay under that you have to watch what you do and not litter your iPad with apps and files you may not use. It is so easy to download them out of curiosity and not use them especially the free ones or files off the Internet. That management alone will probably keep you under the 32GBs.
Apple related stuff like purchases from iTunes and Photostream don't count against your 5GB on iCloud, BTW. Other related data and files is what adds up.
We also purchased the cellular models. ATT for my wife and Verizon for me though we don't use them. I used Verizon for a month while traveling and never got around to hotspotting it like I supposedly could. We wanted it more for the GPS on board. You can dongle a GPS like Bad Elf but that would cost $100 anyway.

I showed your post to my DD who teaches computer graphics and such. Her first question was where are you getting you prices? And which IPad (1 2 3) are you looking at? You can,t iPad 3 for under $200, they are around $500 base priced 16gig unit.
If you doing graphic's you'll want a. iPad 3 64 gig. If your doing documents and spreadsheets a iPad 2, 16gb would work. She said if your going to have a lot of music or if the company wants PowerPoints then move to the ipad3,64gb.
The one I have is a ipad3 32gb HD and ran $600. Nice fathers day/ birthday present.
My personal opinon is if the company is want you to have for work the should be paying for 75% or more. If you need more help pm me and I'll get the two of together. She's leaving for San Diego this afternoon for conference.
