Today I bought replacement brakes for my pickup truck. On my way home I started thinking "where would I get brakes for my trailer?". Can I go into an auto parts store and ask for brakes for a trailer? What info are they going to ask me for and where do I find it? Thanks for your help.

I went into Costco to buy a battery for a motorhome, the guy at the counter asked "What make car?" like he would not look at a battery without knowing the engine size and car make before hand. I said Country Coach, picked up a battery, set it on the counter, and I don't think the kid in the Costco had ever heard of such a brand vehicle. Poor kid.
Back to your subject, try this place.
ETrailer.com
Yet I don't know how you can say "I have a axle under my Salem Trailer" and they would understand it is a Dexter or another brand rated at 4,000 or 7,500 pounds?
They also sell axles and disk brake conversions. Along with any kind of hitch accessory that you can think of, if it has been manufactured. I also use their tips section when I need to post a picture of a trailer power plug, with the terminals identified.

X2 on your local parts store. All the trailers I have encountered use Ford pads.

E TRAILER, I would suggest you buy them with the backing plate and all. Very easy to replace and about the same $ as pads alone.

Redneck Trailer supply. Buy complete backing plate assemblies. Cheaper than just buying the shoes and magnets. Comes completely assembled with all the hardware, shoes, magnets, etc.. And a 4 bolt installation.

e-trailer.com has parts for most if not all trailers made for the past 50 years. Their phone reps are very knowledgeable and helped me with my recent purchase. I am NOT affiliated with them.

We have three RV dealers and two trailer sales places within 20 miles of home. Any of those could furnish brake parts for most any trailer.

Lots of on-line places.....
BUT if you are referring to 'where' as in 'gee I need to get this now'
Check out local trailer shops and/or trailer hitch shops.
If they sale/fix/install trailer stuff........then they have brake parts.
Complete set-up is cheaper than buy individual components.
As to 'what info'.....you need to find out what axles you have.
Make/weight rating....then you can find out which brakes where used.
Either from axle mfg. website/data sheet in rig/calling rig mfg with VIN

I did the whole backing plate option.. It's a simple bolt on and you don't have to mess with springs and such.. Besides, if you need new shoes, you probably need a new magnet too.. Got these at etrailers.com and cost around $45 each.
