Headed out for a quick overnight trip to Congdon Creek Yukon Gov't campground along the Alaska Highway and near Kluane National Park in Yukon. Felt it was a good way to celebrate the longest day of the year ... it doesn't get dark at night now. Dusk-like around 2 a.m. though.

The temps were in the mid-80s and the days were perfect!

SATURDAY

Approaching Haines Junction northbound:

Nearing the campground along the shores of Kluane Lake:

SUNDAY

Walking the dogs at the campground Sunday morning

Another walk along the shores of Kluane Lake

The Alaska Highway below curving to cross Slims River

Driving home, southbound on the Alaska Highway

On Sunday we also hiked to Soldier's Summit, where the Alaska Hwy was officially opened in Nov 1942.

A short distance past the Soldier's Summit monument the very original highway continues and descends to the new highway alignment along the shores of Kluane Lake and the Slims River crossing.

The next image shows the original highway heading in the other direction; we figured this original route would not have been suitable for RVing!

Thanks for the memories of our 2009 trip. We spent the night at the 1st rv camp around the lake coming from the south. There was a nice couple running it.
What is the name of it?

That would be the Cottonwood RV Park, on the shores of Kluane.
We favor the more rustic Congdon Creek Yukon Gov't campground. $12 a night and free firewood, supplemented by the cleanest outhouses in the land!

Beautiful pictures. But you're wrong about that old road -- I've seen worse.

Sure ... we have a big yard in which you can boondock.

The outhouse is fully functional but not as clean as the ones in the Yukon gov't campgrounds!

The old road reminds me of the Top of the World highway when we travelled it in the mid 70's. It was only open about 6 - 8 weeks of the year back then.

Loved the pictures along Kluane Lake. They bring back many memories for us. Are the grizzlies still hanging out in the Slims River Valley? Those hiking trails are often closed due to grizzly activity.

Yes, the brown bears still frequent the area. Often we see a bear or two in the area. This trip, while walking along the lakeshore DH became somewhat concerned about some paw prints in the sandy gravel ...

Just coincidence that he was wearing that particular t-shirt

Back at the campground, numerous other campers warned us about a grizzly seen the day before, just over there ... and there ... and there ... each pointing in a different direction. We usually do see a bear and on our way northward on the Alaska Highway, did see a mother griz and her cub munching greenery alongside the highway.

Although, we often see a different griz and her cub a few kilometres from our cabin. She keeps the riff-raff away
