Quick question.... Chevrolet 1500HD crew vs. 2500 crew - do they tow the same, given all other specs are similar?Quick answer: No they do not.

Yes they do; they're the same truck.

why is this so hard to comprehend?

1500HD or 2500 or 2500HD of used 2000-2005 vintage are all great for families towing travel trailers up to 7000 pounds dry. Any of them would be great for a 3rd/dedicated TV for you.

Look for either a 1500HD or a 2500 (non-HD). I had a GMC 2500 (non-HD) and it is the same as the 1500HD. By looking for either, you open your possibilites slightly. They are getting harder to find in decent shape. As someone else mentioned, Dodge did the same thing with the mega cab. The 1500 mega cab is the same as the 2500 mega cab only with softer rear springs and thus a lower capacity. If you are interested in lots of room, you may also look for a mega cab. They are also getting harder to find in decent shape, but they are out there. I recently picked up an '06 with 53K miles in perfect shape for 15K, but it took about 2 months of looking at Craigslist and Autotrader.

They are not the same power output. Have a good friend who purchased a Chevrolet 1500HD with the 6.0. It did not tow the same as the 2500 6.0. All of the specs were the same on paper. He learned that they had detuned the 1500HD to meet Federal Standards.

Experience shows the real facts.

lol... my friend said this... lol. paperwork shows otherwise. what do you believe someone who "heard it from a buddy" (it must be right then), or paperwork. In fact, I researched the hell out of these trucks, and that's the first of ever heard of that. I've even been in discussions with custom tuners and they make no mention of detuned compared to the 2500. Now if you're talking compared to the 2500HD 6.0L then I might believe it. But I'm willing to bet what your friend was experiencing was a difference in gearing 4:10 vs 3:73. 4:10 in a 1500HD is rare, but fairly common in the 2500.

The 1500HD crew IS EXACTLY the same truck as the 2500 crew. They did not detune it, blah bla bla.

The 1500HD was "created" (rebadged) as a "Catchup" to ford, who had just introduced a 4 door crew cab pickup 1/2 ton. End of story.

(it's funny to hear all the "tall tales" about these trucks)..lol.

Thank you very much, perfect answer for me. And thanks everyone else for all your advice, it's all much appreciated! My husband would normally know most of my questions, but he is on the road a lot, so it's nice to do a little bit of leg work on the boards here so I'm knowledgeable as I'm searching for a TV. Thanks again!

1500HD and regular (non-HD) 2500 trucks are the same truck. Buy whichever one you find that you like.

The 2500HD is a different, true 3/4-ton truck with real full-float rear axle. The 1500HD and regular 2500 had the slightly smaller and lower rated semi-float 8-lug rear axle, instead of the larger, heavier duty full-float 8-lug axle of the 2500HD.

The differences if any are insignificant for the OP. All are good options, so it becomes a matter of finding one in good condition to rely on for towing around 6000-9000 pounds. The more models to chose from, the larger the pool to choose from.

They are the same (as mentioned numerous times)...

You can take 2 identical trucks off the lot and put 2 different sets of tires on them and they will tow differently.

When I was looking at trucks, I wanted a 1500HD or a 2500 with 4:10's. Like JN_B I did a ton of research and I probably test drove 20-25 1500HD/2500 trucks, never heard of a detunned 1500HD.

I love my 1500HD
