My electrical side of the hot water heater does not work. Got a smell and quit. How do I replace the electrical element in the water heater. Is it located on the outside or inside of the motor home? Many thanks

Open the outside access door of the water heater. Locate the element and remove it. It could be screwed in or have a couple of screws holding a plate and gasket to the tank. Either way you will want to shut off the power to the RV and disconnect the wires, and reconnect them to the new element. Elements as I understand can be found at the big box stores. But be aware, elements come in all different wattages, and you should get one of the same rating.

It would be helpful if you posted the make and model of your hot water tank. Interesting that you got a smell, the element is inside the tank and if you got a smell from outside the tank, I would suspect something electrical was burning outside the tank. If it is an Attwood tank, maybe a wire connection burnt open or relay problem….etc? I would do a little more troubleshooting before I’d go out and buy a new element

Is this and add on electric element? Hot Rod or Lightning Rod? Like MPD56 said, I would trace the wires back to source.

Be sure to fill your tank with water before you test it or you will burn out the new one.
