We are supposed to leave today for the Somkies and are considering cancelling due to the heat. We had a few days reserved at Cades Cove and the rest of the week at Smokemont. The forcasts I see are showing mid 100's for the next few days and mid 90's the rest of the week.
Doesn't sound like much fun in that kind of heat without electric. I can see crabby parents and crabby kids.....
Is it cooler in the park, or should we head north instead to stay away from the heat?

We went to the Smokies two years ago, staying in Townsend with record heat all week. I don't think we had a day less then 94, and we loved every minute (and I get heat sick very quickly).
The campground did feel suffocating (we stayed at the Townsend KOA) but we spent so little time there and most of our trip in higher elevations. All it took was a short 15-20 minute drive up and the temp dropped to a comfortable level. We also spent most days picnicking by a refreshing stream which we would spend some time waded into. My girls had a blast and they remember the Smokies as the best trip they've ever taken.
I should note that we have a trailer with air conditioning - it would not have been comfortable to sleep at night in a tent. We spent some time a Cade's Cove and it was hot there, not high enough up to be comfortable.

It will be hot, especially if you plan to do any hiking. I would still go, but only if we could use the air conditioner in the afternoon to get a break and cool down and in the evening to sleep. We were just thinking about coming your way. We have friends in Milford and thought heading north would be a good idea. Wanted to also head to the U.P.

The National Weather Service has a forecast for Cades Cove. High temps in the upper 90's(97 today) for the next week. Lows around 68.
I bet the Sinks and the Y will be popular with people trying to cool off.

We are toying with putting the Smoky trip off at the last minute and going to the UP instead. Only supposed to get in the 80's up there......

you will have NO elec? none.
then I would reconsider only because with no relief it will be LONG and hot. Not like you can get into a cool AC camper or even an AC/fan in a tent.
So if long time in high heat worries you I would hold off til early fall when you know you won't cook.
nothing wrong with changing trips due to weather or no elec. or any other reason. You can still get there later and enjoy.

We have a Genny that will run the AC, but at that temp, I don't know if it will ever catch up and I'm not going to have the Genny run all day while we are out!
That's what we are thinking - the Smokies will be there next year.... I'd rather not have a hot and crabby family for the week, I can enjoy that at home! ;-)
Although DW just called and told me a work emergency may require her presence all next week..... We'll see..... That just means a later vacation, hopefully with less heat!!

ELKMONT in the Smoky Mtns just down the road from Cades Cove has generator hours restrictions... I would image CADES COVE does as well... You are only allowed to run your generator at certain sites inside the camp from 8AM to 10AM and then again from 4:30PM to 7:30PM. The rangers told me in the winter when it was real cold they would extend the 7:30PM time to later so they may be doing this for the hot weather too??? There is no electric at the sites and just tap water at a spigot at the bath room building. The last time we was there we stayed almost a week running off our beefed-up battery system and had a great time. I had to tote my gray water to the bath house and dump down the toliet and also carry back some fresh water to keep my fresh water tank topped off... I have tote containers and a two wheeled folding cart. Worked out just fine fine for us. ELKMONT had ICE on site and firewood... Townsend is where we would go for supplies just a few miles away...
I can almost bet they will not allow you to run your generator all day and all night.
Probably should check with the camp sites to get the real words of wisdoms about running the generators on site.... It has been almost two years since I was at the Smoky Natl Park.
I forgot to add that the tree cover at ELKMONT is very thick. It was always comfortable for us under all the trees. We also camped next to the large creek that runs through the park. Never camped at Cades Cove so don't know if it is on the same creek or not. I have a feeling it isn't...

100 down here this weekend but that will not stop me. The water will be 70 degrees at the springs. The hotter it is outside the colder and more refreshing the water feels
