Tomorrow I'll cross the border into Canada (BC) at Sumas, WA. Up to Dawson Creek, BC to take the Alaska Hwy to Fairbanks. From there work my way down to the Kenai Peninsula. I intend to head back around September 1 and, hopefully, take the ferry from Haines to Prince Rupert.
Got new tires, the truck serviced and my spare on the front. Hopefully, no problems.
If something really exciting happens, I'll add to this post. Else check my website (see below) for where I've camped and some pictures. Probably won't be able to update it daily, however. Depends on WiFi access and if my Verizon card works where I am (which I know it won't in Canada).
I was pleasantly surprised how good the Alcan was 6 weeks ago. Less than a mile of gravel in the first 900 miles and no need to slow down for the frost heave warnings. After Whitehorse it was a mixed bag with most fairly good, but quite a few rough sections. I slowed down and made a car pass that had been behind me and then used it to judge if I needed to slow down for the areas that were marked for rebuild. Have a safe trip.
This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.
Good Luck, and take your time and enjoy!!
If you get a chance when in the Palmer/Wasilla area, look up the Independence Mine in Hatchers Pass. It is a bit of a climb up to the mine, and lots of trails to Hike around the mine. It is a favorite of my kids!

I am Homer, Alaska tonight. If you plan to drive the main roads in Alaska then its no different than driving anywhere else in the world. The weather has been great for about 10 days but they are having rain for the next 3 or 4 days.
Surpricingly, the bugs have also been good. But the fishing has been great.
