I bought a 1000 watt honda inverter generator to charge my dual batts in my camper, when I plug in the camper the overload light comes on on the generator and it goes into limp mode. My question is could the cause of this be the 60 amp converter in my camper? does a 60 amp converter draw to much power for the generator? The generator works fine on my buddies camper though I don't know how big his converter is.
If the batteries are "hungry" the 1000 watt genny will be unequal to the task of charging. You could use it with a 40 amp external charger.
I agree , the battery charging is about the only thing that will use up that 60a converter . The size of the converter in this instance is not so important , it will only draw what it needs so you apparently have some heavy load on it . For instance my 55a converter with nothing on and fully charged batteries is only drawing 0.24a AC . A frig will draw 2-3a AC . An electric WH or micro might do it . I would check for a dead cell in the batteries .
We have a Progressive Dynamics PD 9260, 60 amp Converter in our camper. We also have a Tri-Metric Battery Monitor. When our batteries are down to 50 or 60 percent the initial draw is truly 60 amps. At 13.4 volts (PDs specs) that is 804 watts. Assuming that the system is not 100% efficient your right at or over the rated output of an Honda EU 1000, (900 watts). That is probably why your overload light is coming on. We have a Honda EU 2000 and it handles our two batteries OK but sounds like it is working pretty hard. You could charge one battery at a time but that would be pretty inconvenient.
