Was just looking at the maps over the mountain a few minutes ago (Friday Jul 6 7AM EST) and the whole mountain has bad WX cells all over the place. They dont seem to be moving through just building up in place and dissipating. A hugh bad boy cell on the SSW corner (Happy Valley area).
Still looks like bad weather activity still building up around the Townsend Access to the Nalt Park. Haven't heard yet if the trapped campers in the Cades Cove and Tremont areas have all made it OK or not. The NATL PARK is really loaded down with tree cover - bet the roads and trails are a big mess up there right now...
I'm sure this is not what the campers want to see up on the mountain now..

News reports this morning indicate that there was damage in the Cades Cove area and 2 people were killed, one on a motorcycle and another by a falling tree. Not sure if those killed were in Cades Cove though. It also stated that there were several injuries. Happened about 6 p.m. Thursday evening.
Yep, the fatalities were in cades cove area. My wife and kids were there while I was at work 75 miles away. Lost several trees in their campground (Riverbend campground in Pigeon Forge) and the power was out for about 6 hours on the Sevierville end of Pigeon Forge.
Only two awnings were lost at our campground thanks to a quick thinking campground owner who was helping people drop awnings. Storm came in VERY fast and had straightline winds of 60-70 mph.
Another friend at a different campground said 16+ awnings were lost at his campground. One lady was out holding on to her awning and a gust of wind actually pulled her off the ground for a second. No injuries though.

Sad to hear that their were fatalities. The smokies is one of our favorite parks, and I'm sure the camp grounds were filled this time of year. We've had strong storms just about every day since Sun. night. Trees over power lines and no power for several hours after these storms. Very strange storms, one minute sun shining calm day and the next a storm with high winds, rain and tremendous elec. storm. Expecting another round this afternoon. Stay safe
It was absolutely amazing! We were on the porch thinking about going for a boat ride on the lake when a gust of wind came through tearing out tree limbs and tossing lawn furniture. By the time we got the dog and reached the basement it was over. We lost power for a few minutes, folks across the lake were out all night. We spent the morning cleaning up branches. We are between Chattanooga, (where they had fatalities from overturned boats), and Maryville. Almost due south of Cades Cove. Just hoping there are no hikers out there waiting for help. lizzie
Final count seems to be two dead and eight injured in the park. Cades Cove CG is closed at least for the weekend, along with two more remote smaller park CG's. They're hoping there were no casualties in the backcountry.
With the heat wave in the east, the chance of violent t-storms continues. Keep the weather radio on, and an eye to the skies.
