I have had my RV at a local campground for a couple of months while my RV Garage has been under construction. During this time all the electric has worked fine.

The garage is done and today I finally got the electric in.

When I plugged in the RV to the new electric... Nothing.

So I turned on the generator for 10 minutes. Turned it off and tried the shore power once more... nothing.

Then I turn the generator back on and let it run while I was doing other stuff in the RV. When I decided to go back to the house I cut off the generator. Then I heard the microwave beep. The shore power was now working fine.

Being a total newbie I'm way over my head. Seems like maybe whatever allows the switch-over from generator to shore power might not be working correctly.

Any ideas?

Maybe a bad auto transfer switch. If it does it again give the box a whack with a screwdriver handle. If your not pretty familiar with AC power and hazardous voltage its not a good idea to open up the box on your own.

Does your new rig have a built in surge protector? Ours has a two minute delay while it checks all circuits, etc. before the power begins working. Could it be something like that?

I was thinking that it might be the transfer switch...

I have a surge protector, but it is a separate unit. First thing I did was take it out of the loop. No change when I did that.

The good thing is, I'm going to be back at the manufacturer next week for some other minor fixes. Good time for a problem to pop up.

Call the electrician back out and have him take a look at it.

Sounds like the transfer switch. Plug the RV in run generator, turn generator off and listen to hear if the transfer box is clicking trying to change over. I just had this problem repaired. New transfer switch.

number one mistake
being plugged into shore and starting generator

at the very least you can cause something to jam , at the worse you blow your generator

already happen to at least two members in the past few weeks

it sounds like the generator side of the transfer switch was stuck, so the shore power side could not engage

always unplug shore before starting generator
always turn OFF generator before plugging in shore power
always make sure A/C units are off, and water Heater is off before starting or stopping generator or plugging unplugging shore power

Options, always have options, and the journey goes much smoother

This has always confused me. If this is, in fact, the case then how does the autostart system work? I don't have one yet but I have been thinking about adding a backup system so that my generator and air conditioner would kick back on for my dog if I was away from the coach and the power went off? Of course, way more likely is that a breaker would trip in my coach and the autostart would have no effect, but I guess there is really no way to fail safe every possible contingency.

AFAIK
generator auto start is there to prevent the batteries from going dead
it sense battey voltage
it's not there as emg backup power to keep your air conditioner going

fact is we this time of year with hot weather we are usually seeing posts from people that want a warning alert system to call their cell phone if power fails an the a/c quits , so their pets are not harmed

You can play it safe by unplugging shore power first but the transfer switch is designed to make this transfer plugged in or not. I almost always unplug first. I was only suggesting this procedure as a test.
