we need some type of tailgate. hubby carries a big fishing buggy and rods and coolers. So some block is needed. I would love to just leave the tailgate home but I need something.

On one of my trucks, I welded some 2" channel to each side of the bed, right in front of where the tailgate goes. Into those channel slots, I dropped a 2x6 board to act as a short 6" high tailgate. I could drop two 2x6's into the slots, for a 12" high tailgate, or three 2x6's for a full 18" high tailgate. I didn't own a factory stock tailgate for that truck for most of the time I owned it. The 2x6's worked fine as a tailgate on that truck for years.
The OEM backup camera mounted in the tailgate is really nice, when not towing, for those of us (me) not used to a truck and likely to run into something-hard-and-expensive.
If there were a notched gate with a camera built in, that would be very tempting.

I bought a Handy fifth wheel tailgate and just installed a Boyo license plate frame mounted camera to replace the factory tailgate camera.

Have had a "V" FW tailgate now for 19 years and wouldn't be without it. As said before, it's not it you are going to take out your tailgate, but when. However, you can still hit the tailgate if you have the FW too low when you pull out from under the trailer, don't ask me how I know.
we had to buy the emblems. found out they are adhesive onto the tailgate. not recommended when pulled to reuse, but it didn't bother hubby one bit to buy them new. shopped around and found a local auto dealer that had them $50 cheaper in total. Got the 'heavy duty', SLT, giant sized ram head, and 4X4.
Hubby is having a blast making the mods to this tailgate
I have always had a 5er Tailgate, my 1st 5er was a 86 King of the Road, and there wasn't enough room to lower the tailgate and connect without hitting it with the front of the trailer.
I always watch as I pull away also as my hitch was set low in the bed.
I picked up a used Custom Flow for $100 in great shape from Craig's list.
